Questions about riding around Canmore?

I am heading to Canmore for X mas with my in laws, just wondering if there is any easy riding around the area, my father in law and brother in law want to experience snowmobiling and I get to be the supplier of snowmobiles? Also wondering about elavations and what kind of permits I have to purchase to ride in Alberta.

Your comments will be greatly welcomed

Thanks

It's right beside Banff national park so there isn't any riding around there at all. Your best bet would be riding in Golden. It's only another 1.5 hrs down the highway. I would also try and book a sled now before they are all rented out.

Canmore is a greenie fantasy island......Go west to Golden or Revy....or depending on snow go south to Fording Pass in the Cattarac/Etherington
Enjoy your visit to Canada

Trail passes in Golden can be paid for at the staging areas.

Actually there is some riding in the Kananaskis back aways East at Sibal Flats. That being said, I have never riden there as the snow is always so thin. When will the Alberta government wake up and give us some good riding areas at some elevation without going 200kms+.

oh yea no trail pass is required only insurance and registration a must or you will be busted.

Thanks for your input. I'm guessing we'll stick around the Kananaskis area, not really being riders and being a little up in the years, I'm not sure the In laws are quite ready for the pounding of a full mountain assualt.

Probably a little trail riding and a short climb or two will be about enough.

I wouldn't worry to much about it. Hire a guide and go for a rip. The trail is groomed from top to bottom in most popular locations around Golden. You won't regret it!

Good luck riding in Kananaskis, I was through there this past weekend on my way to Canmore and there isn't a foot of snow anywhere through there. Hopefully things change in the next few weeks for you.

Yes Hospital Creek in Golden is where White and Wild do their guided rentals. Its a good spot for beginers that want some nice views. We usually do some spring riding there and the tour operators don't mind if your respectful.

Do I need a guide to go into this Hospital Creek Area? Can I just get a map and go. I ride about a 1000 miles a year, so I can handle most things that come up. I'm just afraid if I commit to a guide and all that jazz we'll go about 10 miles and the rookies will have had enough?

Thanks for any input

like everybody said, there is no riding even close to Canmore, our elected officials in ottawa have decided to not let us ride anywhere close to the national parks. Although if anybody was nuts and didnt care about the law, Fortress mountian would do just fine.
Enjoy golden

No guide required for Hospital Creek, it's a pretty self explanatory 'follow the beaten track' kind of in and out trail ride. I highly reccomend it, a fun trail and a cool valley.

Canmore Sledding

Golden is definitely your best bet. Sibbald Flats would be closest but you are looking at a 45 minute drive to sled on a logging road. Althought with the snow that is coming down today, there will probably be enough snow by Xmas. Cataract Creek/Etherington offer much more but from Canmore you will be closer to Golden and it offers much better sledding. Check out the Susan Lake Trail for newbie sledders. I take my kids on that route with trail sleds and no problem. Talk to the sled rental place next to the Golden Rim motel as you come into Golden and they will even give you a map. Also, a great place to rent sleds if you need to.

Guys this awesome advice a lot of what I needed to know or at least a point in the right direction. Heading that way for the first time from montana and I just dont want to get in the wrong area or break any rules

thanks again

No guide required but the entrance to the area is a little hidden and if you hooked up with someone who has been ther before it majes you feel much more confident. This place is way better later in the season. PM me in advance and I would show the area. It is great for newbees due to the light riding to the bowls where they can just watch.

I can also put some stickpins on google earth and email them to you so you can follow.
