Questions about installing a BDX intake

I have a 2010 m8 and plan on putting a BDX intake on it and I was wondering if I could get by without using those nose vents since I want to run a skid plate. I was thinking that maybe just running those other vents in the kit should be enough air flow but dont know for sure. I am not willing to loose any power by any chance by doing this and just mainly want to put this intake on for the weight loss and maintain horsepower. So any info would be greatly appreciated so I can stop thinking about wheather or not I could get by with it.

you can run the skid plate and the front vents just take off the skid install the vents and then take a sawsall and cut the ears of the skid.

I guess we didnt run the very front nose vent skins, the skinny ones.

i tried it like that for a season without the cover plate on and just pulling air through the vents in the hood. Straight up doesn't work. It would be fine i think on a trail sled but when I ran it like that every long slow pull would result in too much underhood heat and would trip the intake temp sensor and send the sled into limp mode. I even tried to fab up a shield between the pipe and the and the air box area to keep some of the heat away. Just doesn't work. In fact I would say I lost power over the stock intake running like that. Cut the skid plate and run it like the kit is made to be run.

I did the same thing cutting the ears off but I also took the sawzall and opened up the spot for the skinny vents as well. Seemed to work well, I have no complaints anyway.

hi
cut the ears off the skid plate and it will work great and still give you the protection in the front of the sled

it does need all the bumper vents to work correctly

Keep in mind you can always just run it like a Timbersled intake & leave the shelf off.
I know a couple people that have run the snopro intake like this, it's not ideal, but it's the exact same thing you would get from T-sled then, it just sucks air from under the hood.

What 73goliath said would be my recommendation as well though, cut the wings off & install the screens.

Do you guys have trouble with filling holes full of snow on powder days. Seems like I'm always pulling snow out of the front two stock vents as it is

I run a bra over the front end that keeps snow out of the crack in between the hood & bellypan & keeps the front vent covered.
With the screens that come in the bdx kit you don't get snow in the front vents anymore. On really fluffy pow days you'll definitely get some dust in through the screens, but nothing big.

Without a bra or some other way of sealing it, you will still get snow in the crack between the hood & bellypan though.

run a bra on the front of mine also, like posted above the only way to keep all the pow out...

we had some issues with snow dust getting under the cover and plugging up too. we just used some black duct tape and taped the edges of the cover and seeled it up tight and we didnt have any more problems.

I've also heard of people putting adhesive weatherseal where the hood meets, that sure seems like a cheap alternative to the $60 or whatever bra.

there are two of them.
One covers the joint & the front nose vent

The other one covers that much plus the area on the nose cone that the bdx intake screens cover.

this is the bigger one

This is the smaller one (stole it off of sandman's photobucket site, hope he doesn't sue for copyright)

Have a new large SnoPro bra I'd sell. Never been used. PM me and make an offer if you're interested.

Thought is was overkill with my Timbersled intake (no shelf). Only had a slight bog starting after the sled had been at idle for a few minutes. Placed a few small Frogzskins vents tucked just below the bumper instead. We'll see if they hold up ..

hey thanx for the good info in this thread, i am going to cut the skid plate and buy those mo-flow intake vents and slap them on there, they look alot better to be able to hold up to sticks and branches then those vents that come in the kit. should work out good..
