Question on sled decks

Anyone out there have a sled deck with the following trucks

Nissan Titan

Toyota Tundra

Chev/GMC 1500

How well do they work with a deck on top of them?

dont overload your rig!

I would use caution if you are considering a deck on a half ton as you can easily step over your payload. Not to mention the instability of the vehicle and safety issues with overloading everything from the frame to the axles and brakes. Not to say it can't be done, but I would not suggest it.

I have an 07 Toyota Tundra. I have been kicking the idea of a deck around for about a year. I decided not to do it. Way more cons than pros.

I do have a picture of a Tundra with a deck on it. I'll post it when I find it.

i know a guy that has a deck on the tundra..it has a payload of round 2000 lbs.(toyotas are killer)pull 10,000lbs my old 89 toyota 4x4 payload was 1160lbs i used to bug my buddy that had a 90s chevy 1/2 ton with a 350lbs payload..but wouldnt run a deck on a small truck 4ft wide with a 8ft deck is not cool

Just my opinion.... i'd go with a 3/4ton if you're loading up more than one sled on a deck.

Not only do you have the weight of the sled in the back, you have the additional weight of the deck, gear underneath, and the center of gravity is raised upwards. Add altitude, icy roads, and idiot drivers and you've got a recipe for disaster.

Add up the weight of the deck, sleds, fluids, snow & ice build-up, passengers ang gear.
If this number is smaller than your rated payload capacity you're good to go.
Not many half-tons will have that kinda capacity though.

I have a deck on my ram 1500 with airbags. Works great
guys do it in BC and get busted all the time, even with air bags! the DOT's in BC are sticky about that stuff, and will ticket pretty much any truck not a 3/4 ton or heavier with a deck and sleds on it!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the guys I sled with had his 1500 GM re-certified to a 2500 with the additition of 2500 leafs in the rear and air bags, this is what I was thinking of doing for here in BC

The reason I am looking to deck a 1/2 ton is that I don't need a 3/4 or 1ton except for sledding and I use my truck everyday for work....

In the 40002352 threads I found using the SEARCH FUNCTION, one thing I learned is what this guy is saying is very true.

I think as long as you don't take your deck up to Canada, you'll probably be fine.
I've never heard cops really caring about your weight too much down here in the states.

Air bags would definently be a HUGE plus! I have them on my 95 Chev 1/2 ton and I'v never put a deck on it, but it handles our 26' steel framed enclosed trailer alright (for what it is), cept for the major lack of power:rolleyes: You may consider a brake upgrade too. Slotted and drilled rotors, and high friction pads make a BIG difference, even with the stock calipers.

Just because the cops don't catch ya don't mean you should. The biggest problem is you'll have the deck 2 sleds, and maybe 1 buddy to start with, then you'll say it's fine and maybe tow a 1 or 2 place with more people in cab, and the weight gets WAY more what it was originally going to be. A 2500 vs a 1500 in MPG empty would be minimal and non existant towing/hauling and take a deck a lot better. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable with that kind of weight on a 1500, i've had my deck loaded on my 3500 and it is a pretty good load for it, stop is increased decently and you can feel the wind for sure. Sure people load decks and then pull a 4 place enclosed with 3500, but again it doesn't mean it's legal or safe! Rememeber that people in cab are payload capacity to, ANY tiny bit of weight is, I don't get why people think payload is only what's in the box!

I don't care what anyone says, air bags DO NOT increase what you can haul, they help you haul what the truck can from the factory. If you can't haul what you want without airbags you shouldn't be hauling it.

if you look at some owners manuals.. it has payload over the truck... some make it hard to understand.. chevy and toyotas in the 90s would say over the rear axle..

I certainly wouldnt think about doing it. I get hassled enough by cvse here in bc and I have a 1ton. Maybe take youre pickup box off and put a flat bed on it might pass? You still don't get much steering weight because I did that years ago.

I'm not sure what re-certified means but to equal a 2500 he would also need new axles, brakes and possibly frame.

I had an '04 Ram 1500 shortbox 2WD quad cab with a marathon deck. Put air bags on it and it worked well for my needs at the time. But we all know how things change and I ordered my '06 3500 dually. This in my opinion is the only way to go when hauling or pulling a load. I'm use to a big truck because I've been driving them for over 20+ years. My point here SKRAT is that you might outgrow your 1/2 ton sooner than you think :beer;

After reading these responces and other on another forum, I guess I am looking for a 2500 or 3500 instead of a 1500. Time to go diesel I guess.
