Question on clutching with SLP Pipe Kit on 09 M8 SP 153

I ran all year with stock set up and 70 gram cat weights.I pulled 7800 with the 70 cat weights. I switched to SLP Pipe Kit several weeks ago. I installed the 71 gram MTX weights and 1 gram rivet. Im pulling 7900 RPM with the used belt. BUT, I need to install a new belt this season and I just relized I need to re-shim the spider for new belt.
My question is if i go from the 70 gram cat to a 68 gram cat weight using the pipe kit will I acheive the 8100 RPM. I just hate to have to shim the spider from the reports of causing damage to the spider from the locktite on the threads. ( I know they say to heat it ) Im just concerned. Would love to just make the 68 work, sounds easier to me, any help please?

I honestly don't know of many people that break the primary clutch down for each belt change. The newer M sled primary clutches seem to be alot better as far as the inital clearance than the 05-06 sled clutches. I would put the new belt on measure the clearance, and if it is close to specs , run it. I'm in the same boat as you except with a 162 track. I am dropping in 68 gram weights this year, I was running Cutler 70-80 at 70 grams last year and seeing 7800 rpm.

with the old belt and MTX weights the side clearance is fine, putting on new belt its " way " to tight on side clearance. so with MTX weights installed i have to shim to use my new belt. thanks for your post. rick

my 07 M8 ran 8,100-8,200 with the stock set-up with 68 gram weights. have changed the helix to a 40/36 and added a full slp pipe and am gonna start with the 68's and go from there.

In general are people having to actually go down on the weights with the pipe? I was thinking at 1000-1500' I was going to try the stock 77 weights that are in there now and see. I thought from what I saw you want to clutch the pipe 200-300 rpm more than stock and since the motor is making more power it would seem it should be able to pull more rpm on the same weights and perhaps be close. It would seem odd to me that you would have to go down on weight if the thing really makes more power? That or my understanding of how the clutching really works isn't quite right?

I went from 73g cat weights to 68g cat weights on my 07 M8 when I put on the SLP pipe/can/Y pipe. My riding is from about 6000 to 9000 feet. I have a stock set up in the secondary with shift assist and a Cat gold spring in the primary. I like the low engagement of this spring. I think that the SLP combo makes peak HP at 8100 and torque at around 8000 so I aim for 8100. More power produced at the same RPM should pull more weight but more power at a higher RPM will need less weight. Hope this helps.

I ran 73 gram Cat weights with my 09 M8 153 with a SLP pipe at 4-7,000 feet last winter. I was pulling 8,050-8,100 RPM climbing. It was perfect.

Which is about stock recommended weight maybe a tad less since Cat says 75 for 3-6k and 73 for 6-9k. Well I guess i'll see as I am going to try the 77's and if i'm down on rpm a little then I either get some Cat 75's or try something else.

cat 68 weights

Got my Arctic Cat 68 weights today, installed them and will see how it works at 8000 feet and above with the SLP Pipe Kit. Just hope the snow holds out for a little more testing soon. If any one has the cat part number for the gold spring for the primary, I would like to have it. Thanks for everyones help or comments on my clutching. RickM

Rick, look into getting the light blue spring from speed werks...I ran that last year and loved it. I can't recall the part number...but luv2fly on here told me about it....maybe he still has the info... good luck.

I ride at 8-12k. Im thinking about running a rkt straight 36 with either the cutler red/white or the green sno pro spring and 68-69gr weights for my slp pipe Does that sound about right? which would you use the red/white cutler or the green sno pro? Im interested about this light blue sw primary spring...

With the SLP Pipe Kit, SLP recommended using a 40/36 helix, they dont mention what spring with it, maybe the stock one.
I know RK-Tek was recommending the green sno pro spring with his helix set up.
As soon as I can get back in the snow for testing, if the 68 gram cat weights gives me the 8100 RPM then ill look at the 40/36 helix for more bottom end snap. Good rule of thumb, only make one change at a time and test, or you may shoot your self in the foot.
It has been mentioned here of 3 different primary springs that guys are using. cat red, cat gold, and speedwerks light blue, just for everyones info. Rick

I have read about the 36/40, but would a straight 36 rkt help the stock set up when running the slp pipe? what would the sw light blue primary do vs the ac gold? What are the differences between the cutler red/white spring and the sno pro green secondary spring? Sorry im not on my own computer right now where my spring thread is saved.

I dont think you will get your correct rpm with 68 grm wts at 9000ft and above they will most likely be to heavy. The helix that slp has for the m8 seems to work well.

When I was running 68G weights last year on my 09 M8 with just the slp pipe I was getting 8000-8100 rpm at 9500ft. I switched back to the 70G weights because my sled lost a lot of pull that it had with the 70's. With the 70's at 9500ft I was still seeing 7850-7950 on the tach. What I should have done was left the 68G weights in so I was getting the 8000 rpm and installed the slp 40/36 helix to make up for the loss in pull off the line. Also slp recommends running the stock orange spring in the secondary with the 40/36 helix. If you change out the helix install the rock rollers at the same time. Speedwerx does have a blue/white H5 primary spring that is 120/310 rate that works really good.
