Question on 5.9 Cummins

I have a 2006 mega-cab Dodge with the 5.9 Cummins. I recently bought it and installed a banks cold air intake with banks monster single exhaust. This is my first diesel so I don't know a lot about them, but I would like to install some sort of programmer to increase mileage and help with towing. What is everyone running and what do you recommend? Also what other mods do you recommend? It currently has a 4" lift and 35's on it if that matters at all.

Thanks for any advice,
Jim

On my 06 i went with a full set of gauges, pyro, fuel pressure, and boost. A lot of guys dont run a fuel pressure gauge but i always found it helpful, especially when my lift pump went out at 65000 miles. only way could tell was with the gauge.

Also go with a H&S performance. I've never run one of there setups on a 5.9 but with a 6.7 they have the tuning really good. With the H&S you can run some gauges on it but not fuel pressure. Tranny temp is also important if you have a auto. Never had good luck with edge, ran hotter egts and felt like less power compared to a smarty.

h&s are extremely dirty tunes like really bad "theres a reason they have the nik name Heat&Smoke" i would recomend smarty for tuneing and if you can afford it buy a used edge juice with attitude i say this because of there safety features and there built in gauges. These common rail engines are really dependent on the quality of fuel so you really need to get a Fass fuel system to filter the dirt and take the air out of the fuel and supply pressure to the cp3

Never had any issues with H&S being dirty, unless you run it on a 225 horse tune running a stock turbo, which most guys do since blowing smoke is cool!
Dirtiest tune ive ever ran was a edge juice with attitude, even on a mild tune it would heat up way to quick. I agree on the fass setup or if your not going to go to crazy with it run a turbofyner filter setup, will help save the CP3 and injectors. For tuning smarty has a good setup and has been around for quite awhile, never had any problems with them.

Is anyone running the Banks IQ with the economind tuner? I like the options it offers and it kinda seems like something I could use without screwing up my truck. I am not looking to blow black smoke out everywhere or do any truck pulls. I just want to try to increase my mileage and make towing a bit better.

Thanks again for the help,
Jim

Well i own a 6.7 mega so maybe there tuneing is different me and a buddy have simular trucks just differnt color and wheels but hes running blackmax with trans tune and his truck smokes like a freight train he would black out both lanes before the turbo spooled and my smarty on 9 just hazes i like smoke so it dont really bother me but if you can make the same or more power on a smokeless tune its more impressive to me.

If you truely want the best tune for your truck spend the money on efi live they just came out so give them time to devolpe good tunes its fully adjustible they can change anything and everything

Well i own a 6.7l qclb, they will smoke like a freight train if you crank it up and just lay into it. I agree on the efi live, give them some time to get the bugs worked out and some guys to get tunes out and its gonna be one of the best programmers out there.

Banks has been good about safety on engines and no smoke, run good and never many issues. they just always seem to be higher priced than everyone else

High alt, the Bullydog tuner smokes like a train and runs a little hot on EGTs on my 07 5.9. Apparently not getting enough air. You may have better luck with the intake and exhaust.
Low altitude it doesn't smoke near as much, can't get much over 1200deg even on Crazy Larry, but it also seems down on power...confused.

Smarty is one of the most highly regarded tuners out there. That ans a set of guages. Boost, EGT, fuel pressure is all you need.

If your looking for a 100hp or less go with a Smarty Jr. They work very well ! Turn your turbo up as well to 32-34psi and you can pull nice big loads and your EGT will never go above 1200. Truck runs smoother, better fuel econ, and more power.

I can't remember where the HE351 turbo loses its efficiency but im sure it not much higher than the HE341 turbo at 33-34. Above those number you start building heat.

The stock transmission really can't handle much more than that reliably. If you have a built trans then go with the Smarty S-06 and have fun. I know a lot of guys like the H&S for the new trucks but not sure how great they are on the 3rd gens.

Get some guages for sure then you can watch what happens with the EGT vs boost etc !

sounds like you have a like its going into limp mode, my buddys 06 with suncoast trans with crazylarry will get to 1500deg lil under 1/4mi he hangs with a d-max with built trans and efi pretty good for heavier truck and a canned tune but it really sounds like limp mode what kind of boost you makeing????
