Question for you old people..

;) So I start my first semister at the U in a couple months. I'm just going for the first semister then finishing the rest of my generals after my mission. The question i have is... today we had to do a career planning in school and it really has got me thinking today, lol. What do i wanna do when i grow up?!? I like big deer and deep powder, two very expensive habits which is a bad thing, so i would like a job that allow me to continue these hobbies. I know this post might seem kinda dumb but this is a serious question.

What are some careers that have a solid outlook in utah and that you can actually somewhat enjoy?

What do you guys do? are you happy doing it? How much school?

I know everyone says this but i think i dentist isn't a bad way to go. 8 years of school (much rather be in school, bumming off of my dad than working anyways;)) and then making a good living after the initial sacrife of 8 years.

Anyways any suggestions would be awesome. all my friends like know what they are gonna do and honestly i don't really have a clue.. would like to hear what you guys do and your overall satisfaction of it. thanks..

if you're going to do dental school, forget what everyone is saying - you don't have to graduate, you only have to take the prereqs to apply to dental school. that can save you some serious time. my bro is at "the" ohio state for dental school. outlook is good for the medical field as well, just ask sunridge:D i sell drugs by the way, ok money, plenty of free time.

OK, so I'm not old (yet) but you are asking for advice. My Dad always told me to find a job with benefits and not to be self employed like he was for 35 years. Looking back I say screw that! ......A "Career" is for the ones that climb the ladder (got in then out of that boat real fast). I still think if you can hunt, fish, ride and get by on whatever you do is just fine. A career is for those people that don't know what those three things are all about....they have no idea what it is like to live a simple life instead of keeping up with the jones'. I say get some business classes, maybe something related to what you like to do, and go from there. My opinon........

you're right, anyone with a career would never understand how to hunt, fish, ride and enjoy simple life. glad it's just your opinion.

Nope, You're right. Career was a poor choice of words. My point being is that I see a lot of people where I work climb the Corporate ladder (my version of a career) and end up not having any time to do these sorts of things (hunt, fish) and they try to buy it back. They forget what life is about, just don't get too caught up in work is what I was trying to say.

Hel Nick if Id a known you were a drug dealer Id a thought twice about riding with ya!

Mak if ya like sledding something in construction MIGHT be it. Im so busy in the fall though I havent pulled a tag in years. Not to mention it is a vicious cycle to.

Morning Makaveli, I've been employed as a "power lineman" for bout 21 years and I really enjoy it. Lots of outdoors hard physical work for a young man, and plenty of office type word after your not so young..

but if ya have someone willing to pay for higher ed, that's a no-brainer........... go higher education

peace-

johnny

not everybody's success will work for you. Business education can teach you how to deal with and handle the money that you do make. I sell real estate. It takes a certian nack to be successful at it as in any career. And I have a career AND balance in my life. It's what matters most to any happy life. Balance. I have time to do the things I love and the ability to work as much as I want too. works for me. I have left money on the table of life but don't want it all. get a plan about what you want in life... home, family etc and then work accordingly.

Listen to Rock Star...come up with a plan. Most successful people plan, put 110% into whatever they are doing, then follow through. I will say this about dentistry in Utah: I've heard that Utah has the most practicing dentists per capita in the US. What does that mean for you if you choose dentistry...tons of competition and you're probably not going to pull the coin that you would in that profession in another state. Do some cost / benefit analysis of average salary compared to years of school and cost.

My background is information systems but I am in sales. The business background I had was really a great foundation for just about anything you will do. Keep in mind that there are alot of people who have degrees that end up in a field other than their degree. Good luck.

There are a lot of great professions! Find something you love and do it well, better than your competitors! Find a profession that can be the third addition to your passions of hunting big deer and deep powder. I love what I do as a physical therapist, but it requires a lot of work. I went to school for 7 years. I believe there is always room at the top, regardless of the career you choose! Also remember, if you see a person standing on top of a mountain....they did not fall there!!!

Good luck!

BTW....how's your nose? I think there is still some skin on my trailer! ;)

If you have parents willing to pay for it, you would be an idiot not to go into the medical or professional fields. Going to school is not a sacrifice, its an investment.

Dentistry is good. You might also consider engineering. Accounting is a good degree and you can get a masters in 5 years, you will probably start at around 45-50k at a large slc firm and move up quickly. Law school is another option and the job market is still pretty good, but not for everyone.

When you get to school, make sure you network with other people.

You need to decide what work excites you. If you dont like the profession you choose it doesnt matter how much money you make you will hate it.

I am a software Engineer. I love my job, its like solving a puzzle every day. Putting pieces together to build something great. If you are computer savy becoming an IT professional is a really good field. Computers arent going away anytime soon, infact were migrating to them faster and faster. Utah is also known as Silicon peaks (i still laugh at this hahahaha) not for fake boobs but for IT industries that reside here. Lots of opportunities. But there is an idea, become a plastic surgeon... :)

Go to school...it sucks when your in the middle of it but an education will bring you freedom. Like previously stated...it would be dumb not to go to school if the parents are going to pay for it.:face-icon-small-sho

haha wow sunridge, that was funny, was a good year:D

I'm kinda leaning towards i dentist now. hopefully with my CE and AP classes i'm taking now i can be fairly far into my generals by the time i get back from my mission. as for a dentist, Intereraction with friends and patients, hands on work, great pay for low hours.. it sounds pretty good to me...

Anyone know how the job outlook would be for it?

BTW!!!!!!!!! Be carefull out there on. A kid at my school hadn't come yesterday or today so we got curious to where he was at. One of my friends called his family. He was riding saturday and landed little hard on only about a 20 foot cliff drop (hit it a multiple times, you would never think it could be that dangerous..) he rode it out but when he got to the bottom he realized he couldn't move his fingers off the handbar's.. lifelight to the hospital.. broken back. doc said ten more pounds of pressure on his sprine and he would be paralyzed.

I work for the state, the money sucks but the vacation and sick leave are great! Now if i just had some money to be able to do something on my time off!

What about becoming one of those painters/artists who paints the bikinis on the supermodels??? Why would you want to bend over looking in someone's mouth all day when you could do that? Just a thought!

pretty sure it's also known as Silicon Peaks for the other reason as well. ;) p.s. if you want to make the big bucks as a dentist, you will have to be willing to leave utah. too saturated.

I have been in school for 4 years now and have changed areas 4 times. Plus got married and had two kids in that time.

So my advise.
Pick something you can see your self doing in 50 years. Then study it and be the top of your class. If you change your mind its not a bad thing but take business because it applies to all areas. I change areas that had nothing to do with each other and now i have started over again.

In a conversation with my buddies father about what I wanted to study. He told me to take business classes. Because it ties into any area and can get you higher faster. This man started a business based on a dollar and made millions sold it for more millions and now makes millions investing in for other people with millions plus is the owner of another business making kids clothes and it is growing even in this economy and he told me it was his business degree that gave him the tools.

(all a dollar / green backs averaged over 11 million a year)
