Question for those with ABS backpacks

Hey guys, I recently purchased a abs escape 30 backpack. I have a question about the leg straps. First off how many use them? Second, I hooked up the red straps around the crotch area but there is still an extra black strap that came with the pack. I read the manual and watched the DVD and searched the internet and no luck on anything about the straps actually. How have you guys hook them up(both red and black)?

Pics would be great

Thx a bunch and happy new year!!

Cheers

I used the crotch strap till i forgot to hook it once and then it got caught and ripped off. never really bothered me but dont know if ill put it back on either. safty and function wise it should probally be put back on and used.

I dont use the crotch straps(I let anyone climbing in our group use it when they climb so its a headache to adjust every couple of minutes for a new guy)I did make sure that if properly fastened with the other straps it wouldnt be able to slide off ...

Reason for the crotch strap is to prevent the pack from riding up in an avalanche and having the sternum strap choke you. It wouldn't be good to survive an avalanche by deploying the avalanche bag and then die of being choked by the sternum strap because you did not use the leg strap. This is true for all avalanche airbag packs. Put a pack on without the leg strap and then lift the pack by the shoulder straps. Where does the sternum strap end up? At your neck. Remember that an avalanche has plenty of force to shift the pack into this position.

good info mike..thanks..

Good info..Thx guys. I never thought about the choking factor. I assume the red straps are the ones you hook up but do you guys have any idea of what the black one is for?

the black strap goes right at the very top of the pack and is for external storage of a skiers helmet...the 2 female clips are mounted right where the shoulder straps come off the top of the pack.....

Do the packs on your back prevent your rear zippers from in your coat from being vented? It seems like the back would sweat a lot with the pack on. Any packs better with this? Just curious because I like the back zipper open when I start to work, but I like NOT being buried more.:)

I wear a large pack, and I used to need zippers open when I was working hard, but I don't have that problem anymore... I can truly say that the Klim gear is worth every penny! :)

Am i the only one, who feels that how the shovel and probes attatch to the outside of the abs escape pack is kind of hokie? It just doesn't seem like there is enough there to hold the shovel and probe on the pack.

Also has anyone else found that there is not enough cord length in the set off cord. I am not a small guy and have had to lower the activation handle as low as it can go and it is still in my neck face area.

thanks
tim
