Question for Central Oregon Riders

So here is my second post.

I'm just getting back into it, and I will probably stick to mostly trails this season. Primarily around Diamond Lake and Mt Bachelor.

My question is, on the trail maps, it looks as if you can ride from Mt. Bachelor all the way to Diamond lake. Is this possible and has anyone done it? I would do it will extra fuel and a buddy, but I'm just wondering if there is any reason that can't be done.

It's been done...it's long, bumpy at times, long, flat, long and long. Stop at Manley's to reload on grub and drink.

Yes, I plan on staying the night, or two, at Diamond Lake then returning. With two machines, I will bring my 8ft sleigh with an extra 30 gallons of fuel (6 fuel jugs) and all of our gear in the sleigh.

Thanks for that link. I have never found that before. I'm also thinking of ordering the maps for my gps from sledgps. I wanted a local opinion though.

Also, yes, one of the big things will be to do the Crater Lake part of it as I'm a photographer and want to document much of the journey. The photos will be uploaded into Panoramio for inclusion in Google Earth.

I'm from Alaska... when I was a kid it was not unheard of for us to take a 150-200 mile trip each way on a weekend. Of course, there was no other way to get around either. When I was 16 I used to deliver mail to a few of the villages with my Polaris.

30 gallons of fuel @ 6lbs/per = 180 pounds. You might as well buy fuel at diamond. Just a thought. :face-icon-small-win

No reason to have more than a 2.5 gallon can of gas on each sled. Easy access to gas at crescent jct and diamond lake, just ride up to the pumps. Speaking from my experience on that trip there is no reason to bring a tow sled behind your snowmobile. If you have too much gear then save the trouble and trailer to diamond lake with your rig. If the snow is deep over windigo pass you will hate towing a sled behind and possibly get really stuck, just my 2 cents...... :face-icon-small-coo

I think I will end up doing it in parts at first, then doing one long trip once I have a handle on the area south of Deschutes Bridge. I have never been through that area so I might just trailer in to Deschutes Bridge and take a look around there for a day or so.

I didn't realize the trail in there isn't groomed. The main reason I was sticking to the trails is because of the sled. If I go without the sled, then I can probably make the trip a little nicer.

What are the prices like for fuel at Crescent and Diamond? I was hearing some rediculous prices quoted of $7+ per gallon out of Diamond. I guess I could just call them up and ask them.

Diamond is not much more than at normal stations for gas. You can also take a southern route to DL from Cresent Lake through Chemult. You can ride into town for gas. Miller lake is a good ride. Also for day rides to learn the country the snow park is nice and not used much. Jim
 
If the snow is good, you could actually start at the Ray Benson snow park in the Santiam pass (highway 20) and ride to Crater Lake. A lot more miles, but different scenery along the way.

I wouldn't take more than the 2.5 gallons of fuel and a credit card. You should be able to get clear (non-ethanol) gas at both Crescent Lake and Diamond Lake if you prefer that flavor. The prices will likely be a bit higher than in town, but the convenience is well worth it.
