question for archery hunters

I have been archery hunting for about 10 years now and 3 years ago I upgraded from a bear bow to a Matthews DXT which I really love. I have been shooting a whisker biscuit for a rest and really liked it but the time has come that I would like to be a little more accurate at 60 and 70 yards so it's time for some upgrades!!!! First off I'm looking for a new sight that is most likely a 7 pin. Secondly I would like to get a fall away arrow rest and would like some recommendations on what works for you guys. Now I'm not going to get into pissing matches with anybody over how far a bow can effectively kill a animal at so lets not go there. Anyways what sights and rests do you guys use? Also I'm left handed. Thanks in advanced

Spot hog is a nice sight as for the arrow rest I cant really help I still use and old style shoot thru rest

Ripcord

I've been shooting a ripcord fall away rest for 7 years now without a single problem. I'd defiantly put one on my next bow. As far as sights go I've had a few, right now I'm shooting a spot hog 5 pin and I like it but I wouldn't mind acouple of more pins my self. I like the horizontal sights because I feel like you have a less obstructed shot window than on the vertical sights.

i shoot the spot hog 7deadly pins wrapped great sight no complaint dont think they make it anymore but get the real deal 7 pin is same.make sure you get the smaller pins for your 50 + yardages i run the .10 on my 50 60 70.as for rest i only use the quad ultra hdx never had a issue even at -30 in sask.i run the same set up on both my bowtech destroyer & my cpx.

Spot hog 7 deadly pins, the wire in it hels you pull the bow level and you can mark the cable in case your pins get hit you know where they were!

Junk the whisker biscuit and get a quality drop out rest :)

Qad ultra drop away is a great rest had one on my mathews monster and its on my heli m now. Works great. Also had a spot hog hunter hog it sight and now have tru ball axcel armour tech 7 pin sight! I love it. My opinion is its better than spot hog and pins are a little brighter. The adjustment for the pins on the tru ball is awesome.

I've tries a bunch of rest and sights an really like QAD's and Rip-cord rests an as far as a solid hunting sight try the tru-glo superslam its a 5pin dove tail with a huge aperture and light and it's also micro adjustable best that I've cone across!

Thanks for all the choices and ideas guys! Now I just have to spend some time researching some of these and make up my mind.

I use the Spot Hog 7DP and I am going to upgrade it with the wrap around fibers.

I too, use a Trophy Taker rest. Thought about using a biscuit because I'm tired of having the arrow fall off while I am waiting.

70 yards? Little far of a shot on an animal if you ask me. Too many variables to make it a bad hit. Twigs, leaves, wind are just a few. Besides, where I hunt a 70 yard shot is not possible. Too many obstacles.

I enjoy the challenge of getting within 50 and I pride myself on being able to do it consistantly. Now getting a ethical shot off is a differerent story.

get yourself a quad ultra with a flick of the finger you can lock the rest in the upright position & it holds the arrow in place till the arrow is released.as for the distance thing people need to figure out the diff between ethics & personal opinion :face-icon-small-win,just my 02:face-icon-small-hap

70 yards is a long shot but doable, like every other hunting situation the hunter has to evaluate all the variables and make his decision and live with that decision. I set 80 and 90 yard targets up all of the time for practice. What that does for me is makes the 40 yard shots a breeze. Once you start practicing the longer shots it gives you some appreciation for how long that arrow is in the air.

The ripcord can be flipped and locked also. My dad and brother shoot the QAD and its a great rest also I'm not trying to sell the ripcord just giving the facts.

never used a ripcord but have heard nothing but good about them, iam not pushing the quad other than it has worked perfect for me:thumb:

Black Gold sight and ripcord rest. I bought a new Helim this year and did a lot of experimenting with rests. 5 different drop aways and 1 whisker. All that I can tell you is that the accuracy difference is very small. I have been shooting my entire life and I saw almost no difference between 3 of the drop aways and the whisker. It's all personal preference and some drop aways don't work for every shooter. I've never been a whisker guy, but was surprisingly impressed. I did have a 7 pin and took two out to make it a 5 pin. For target shooting a 7 is great, but for hunting I prefer 5 so that my field of vision is less obstructed.
70 yards is not too far to take an ethical shot with the right conditions and modern equipment. Of course we all enjoy and try to get as close as possible. I shoot targets out to 90 all summer long. I would never launch an arrow at an elk at 90, but I have shot 1 at 68 yards and one at 72 yards. They were both clean kills and down in under 100 yards.
If you don't practice long shots, try it. Shooting 50 and under becomes an absolute breeze. Don't lose the trophy of a lifetime because you aren't comfortable with your equipment!
