Question about sled building

How do you go about titleing a a sled that you built from the ground up. I would think that if you bought a tunnel or motor from an already titled sled you could use that old title but thats not the case. All the major pieces i.e. tunnel, motor, rear suspention, and body pannels are not titled. Any ideas??

It all depends on the state. Some states you have to take it to the DOT, and have it approved.

You dont have anything???

like outlaw said.. depends.. here is South dakota.. all we had to do was cut out the vin # from old tunnel and rivet it on the aftermarket tunnel.. and that was it for the whole sled to title it

If you are in Canada, you take the machine to the RCMP. They check the serial number of the engine to make sure it's not stolen. Then they give you a new s/n to put on the tunnel. Fairly simple. If you have an aftermarket engine and tunnel, you need reciepts for both.

Title?

Some states do not even have titles. (Washington) I would use the rgistration from the bulkhead that you are gonna use. Unless you build your own bulkhead, or tube chassis? I would call a custom sled builder in your area and ask them the "better" way to go. I am sure there are several ways some might cost more than others. Or, cheat and use a tab off of an old sled, I'm sure you can find one cheap!

In Saskatchewan, all I had to do was go to a SGI License Issuer and they had a licensed notary from the office come down and sign off on it and they gave me a VIN sticker.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone for the help. This never really crossed my mind until recently. I'll call Montana DMV tomorrow and see what the deal is. I'm thinking finding a sled thats wrecked and still has a clear title to take the VIN plate off of might be the way to go. Thanks again for the help.

Carefull about that, I did that to an old Kawasaki with an older Ski-Doo title and vin plate. The first day out at Taylors Fork there were Snow Pigs at the trail head. Even though the sled had current tags, they asked to see my registration paper an it was pretty obvious that the Kawi was not a Ski-Doo, that cost me $90 for an improperly registered vehicle. I had to do a lost title search with MT DMV. Took forever but I finally got one for the Kawi. I suspect they will want the title from the original sled and it's VIN. You will need to take the old vin, stamp it on your new tunnel and have this inspected. In Gallatin Co. it is the sheriffs office or MHP. They will sign off on an inspection slip and you can get it registered. The same process you would go through to register a homemade trailer.
