QUESTION ABOUT PONTIAC GTO's....

need some info about a 69 gto...

did they all have a ram air engine?
if it isnt a ram air engine, would the basic 400 engine have kind of a high rise
lookin manifold??? maybe not high rise but, a manifold that you can see the
seperate intake ports and almost put your hand underneath...

i know that sounds stupid but, thats the best way i can explain it...

a 69 if I can remember from my buddies definately has ram air and hideaway headlights

I had one that did not have the Ram air and it had a bench seat with a 3 on the tree. Rare car. Anyway, It will have the type of intake you are talking about. With a valley pan under it. Mine did not have the hideaway headlights. It was an el cheapo goat.

this car has hideaways.... the engine is what im not sure of.. i do not know if its a ram air.. you can see thru the intake to the valley pan but, my question is, if it were NOT a ram air, could you see the same thing????

Ram air was the hood scoops sucking air into the air cleaner. You should know if you got one. The air cleaner was wierd looking and sucked up tight against the under hood foam to get fresh air. If I'm not mistaken. It was an option back in 1969.

yes you would be able to see through to the valley pan.If you get the engine numbers you can tell if its a ram air or not.

If I were to buy one, the head castings would probably be my main concern. The casting number is the two numbers on the center two exhaust ports. Sorry, I can't remember the number you need.
The date code on the heads is important too. That's if you're considering something that's numbers matching.
You could probably get all that info with a google search.
Yep, Pontiac's have an air gap between the valley tin and the manifold.

All Pontiac motors have the intake manifold sitting above the valley pan. Aftermarket manifolds like the Edelbrock Torquer sit up a little higher. They also used to have different names for the 400's such as Ram Air ll, lll, lV and the ultra rare RA V. Not all had the actual ram air setup that pulled in outside air through the hood scoops, but were still called ram air motors.
