Question about mountain cat 800 159" sled

Hi all,

I am thinking about buying a 2001 Mountain Cat 800 with a 159" track. I have never owned a mountain cat and was wondering if anyone could tell me

-how well they trail
-how dependable they are
-any recalls or issues with 2001s
-overall quality of sled

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you,

Justin H.

I can tell you they didn't come with that track.

First year of the 800. I had good luck with mine. The mechanical reverse kept breaking. Oh yeah, It seemed that year was cursed by speedo side axel bearing failures. I've been afraid to put speedos on three of my last 1-m's.
The 2001's came with 144'' notched for cooler track, not good in snow. Yours might be set up to work now, but it didn't come that way. The first 159'' came on a late release '03 900, and by then they has dropped and rolled the chaincase for larger drivers and better track angle.

Might want to look for an 03 or an 04. Not that much more money, about 25lbs lighter, you will get the 900 instead of the 800, removable seat, dropped and rolled chaincase, coolers in the corners (no notched track), lighter skid, bigger rear wheels, carb or efi in 04', two piece rear tunnel. Plus the 01's had the smaller crank. All this is worth the few extra bux.
