Question about first time Riding in Togwotee

If Cooke does not get enough snow for thanksgiving or Togwotee has more than Cooke our crew is interested in going there...

Questions:

Is there normally enough snow to ride there on thanksgiving?
How rocky is it there? Or what does snow depth have to be before any one attempts to ride there....

I know trails aren't marked be we have GPS.

any insight would be good......... We are coming from 900 miles away....
thanks

Togwotee

The snotel site says 20.9 inches. You need around 40. inches before it is much fun to travel 900 miles. The forcast is for snow off and on all week. Check Turpin meadows thread on here Dennis always keeps the sledders up to date on day to day weather and storms and also on how much. Watch the webcams and the snotel site.. Rocks aren't usually a problem down in the flats and meadows... But the CREEKS are!!!!

Togwotee

We went just after Thanksgiving last year. It was my first time riding up there and we had a blast. There was tons of snow but no base to it at all and we had a few close calls. We look forward to going back but are going to wait until a little later in the year.

Lets say they 2 days before thanks giving they are at 30 inches...... are we able to get places safely?

The idea is that we want to take a trip thanksgiving. Normally go to cooke but snow this year doesnt look to good. Wonder where the best place to go if no one gets dumped on.....

Togwotee

I've been going there for 15 years. I would agree you need 40 + inches to ride with out tearing up machines. If there is not a enough snow try Snowy Mountain. We will be out with 3 2009 800 Summit X (snow permitting)

You will be able to ride the cd trail towards the pass and you will find some meadows to play in.. Pray for snow!!

The Snowy Range is in southern Wyo. in between Laramie and Saratoga.
Keep watching the snotel sites for snow updates..

Togwotee's snotel is up to 25".. If this keeps up the weekend after T day could be good???

Another question.

Want to go to Tog the 26 through the 31st but never been there don't know where to stay.

Where is cheapest place to stay around there? Other towns? how far is the drive everyday to unload and ride?

Check with Dennis at Turpin meadows. He may have those dates open?? if not you better check in town in Dubois.. asap

Got rooms in dubois.

Next questions-

how far is that from the area where we can unload on the mountain?

and where do we unload once there?

I see you got your rooms already, but I would highly recommend Dennis and Turpin Meadow. Just got back from there yesterday.......Here is a copy of my report and some pics.....

I would say that out of the 9 of us who were there.......NONE were disappointed. We had an awesome time. The snow was sketchy down at the lodge level, and even at the Togwotee lodge level, but up top was awesome for the first ride out.

We sledded two days, the first day we rode the whole lava mountain area....mostly on the south side. It was great snow up top and lots of fun.

The second day we trailered to the summit and rode into the brooks lake lodge area. We tried to ride up towards Jules Bowl first but still too many stumps and rocks. STAY AWAY! We then headed up to upper brooks lake and right up on the wilderness border and it was sweet. Probably 3 to 3 1/2ft some good little climbs up through trees and plenty of fun boondocking hills right off the lake.

On the way out about half way down the road from the lodge we dropped to the southeast side by the snotel sight and the powerline and you could have played ALL DAY just right there. Snow was great and it was a ton of fun.

Those pictures were taken from up top off of the CD trail. You van drive from Dubois and use the parking area right at the top of togwotee pass. This is between the Brooks lake parking area and togwotee lodge. The trail crosses the road right there.

You will need to travel about 20 - 30 minutes up and you can park either at the Brooks lake parking lot, which is new and hugh. or go up towards Tog. lodge and park by Flagstaff road and that puts you right at the CD trail. And from there you have all kinds of options to go ride... Have Fun.:)
