PWCs banned off of Cali

Interesting read....basically no more tow-in surfing off of Cali(No more using jet-skis for surfing). Read the article, the surfers arguements(which I agree with) sound alot like what we as sledders face.

Interesting, though it looks like there were a couple of issues..

One, they were supposed to have been banned a while ago, but they made a three person ski and got passed the rules...

Two, it kind of sounds like some rich people in the area didn't want them there in the first place...

Three, These are sanctuaries, I don't think they are banned in all of Cali, just these special Wilderness type areas..

It is interesting though... the comments are good too.. Too many people jumping on the hate environmentalists wagon without thinking about it....

To me there is a terminology issue and it goes like this...and has nothing to do with snowmobiling

Environmentalist:
Someone that wants little or no human trace in the natural world (not the same as "Leave No Trace" principles). A subset of this group believes that they are the only ones qualified to venture into the natural world and therefore lobby to keep others out.

Conservationist:
Someone that respects the land enough to take it upon them self to become a steward of the land while at the same time understanding that the land provides for those that choose to use it wisely.

Based on my definitions, I hope everyone and their dog jumps on the "Environmentalists Suck" bandwagon and never falls off. Environmentalists are just above hippies on the food chain (not SLDGY's type of hippie though:D )

I'm on the hate environmentalists wagon....... always have been, always will be.....

don't need to know the issue..... If they are for it, I can almost guarantee i'm not!!

I'm pretty much with you on this one.
There is no such thing as a GOOD enviromentalist.
They generally don't have a clue what they are talking about, they are just in it for the feel good aspect. They were brainwashed to believe anything said by such groups as the sierra club and earth first are true and anyone that says otherwise is wrong. They have no idea why they are wrong, they just are.

OK sorry, only banned in certain areas....still areas that are home to some of the most epic big wave surfing off the US coast.....just like epic sledding lost to wilderness.

It will be interesting to see how surfers allign with this. Surfrider Foundation is a huge group in the sirfing world that many surfers like and belong too, but they were for the pwc ban and have stated that they will always side with environmental sides.

Did I read the story wrong, or does it sound like guys can still have boats and zodiacs in these areas?

For rescues I think so, but otherwise no boats allowed... I think that was the point as the areas being sactuaries.. just that a loose definition of watercraft or jetski's allowed them in..

so you can use a slow cumbersome boat for saving a life but not skis? I guess I'll keep tabs and see how many guys die next winter and watch for suits.

That is the argument I guess... The slow cumbersome boats are like harbor patrol or something... a gov sector, not civilians.. that is the difference... The jet skis were all civilians..

Similar to you can't snowmobile in wilderness, but you sure can land a helicopter in there to rescue someone....

that's the kicker.

The guys out at Mavericks and Ghost Tree said that it's not the gov or any other service doing the rescues it's the guys out in the water surfing.

I thought of the wilderness "standards" as well. can't sled or drive but if a hippie breaks a leg you can....or fighting fire as well.
