Putting my ’08 M1000 on a diet

What are some of the best and most cost effective ways to cut some weight off the M1000? I have already decided to put a new SLP can on with the pipe coming later. I’m going to swap my ’08 seat for the new ’11 seat. Pulling off the plastic rear bumper and rack then adding a new LED taillight and aluminum bumper. Any other cost effective upgrades I should be looking at to add power and cut weight? Thanks!

I have the same sled (08M1K) and here is what I have done so far to drop weight. I believe the mods I have done are by far the most cost effective ways to remove weight and add performance. Aside from buying a timbersled skid and front end I don't see much more weight coming off of this thing.

16 lbs - SLP Pipe Setup
11 lbs - BDX Diamond Lite Drive
10 lbs - Sold challenger extreme and installed power claw
9 lbs - BDX oil injection delete
8 lbs - BDX black box Intake
6 lbs - Remove 6 boggie wheels total from rails and install two wheel kit
4 lbs - BDX head light delete
4 lbs - Van Amburg light weight bumper mod
15 lbs- No seat. I never sit on it and its easier to jump from rail to rail without it.

Thats a total of 83lbs which is just an estimate but should be close. I wish I could find somebody with a scale so I could weight it.

No seat is pretty hard core. The Boss seats are a few pounds lighter than the new cat seats, but imo not as comfortable and more expensive. Remove all the insulation under the hood, don't need it and it's heavy. Two wheel kit, pipe and or can, stay away from the oil delete, ask WYOBOY about that one. Taking 30-40 pounds off can be done pretty easily. The next step gets a little more expensive with a BDX Diamond lite drive with reverse delete, bdx drivers, takes off 11 pounds and are better than stock, and you can regear at the same time (55-65).

11 lbs - BDX Diamond Lite Drive- Was this an expensive/difficult to install mod? I have been looking at a lot of people who run it and havn't heard a lot of negative. Does this help improve the strength over the stock DD?

9 lbs - BDX oil injection delete- I know someone who has done this, looks like an easy way to save almost 10 lbs but how big of a pain is it to premix fuel every time you fill up?

4 lbs - Van Amburg light weight bumper mod- Sweet and is one of the mods I'll be doing this summer

15 lbs- No seat. I never sit on it and its easier to jump from rail to rail without it.
I just don't know if I could rock no seat but I might have to try this out at least once.

The BDX lite is an easy mod it just replaces the stock diamond drive and drive shaft, its a direct bolt on. You will loose your mechanical reverse but if you have had your sled reflashed with the 09 update then you can hook up electrical reverse as long as you swapout your stock helix for a one with a reverse notch.

As far as the oil injection delete goes your going to get a lot of people telling you not to do it but its a good mod in my eyes. Prior to the delete I checked my ratio several times and averaged 32:1 which is over kill if you ask me. I mix my fuel at 36:1 to run on the safe. The get more consistent performance out of my sled and lost quite a bit of weight for $20 and I save on oil. According to BDX you don't need to do anything to lube the waterpump shaft but I added the grease zert to the bottom of the motor where the oil line currently goes and a couple squirts of grease every other ride and you won't have any problems.

The 09 bumper mod via van amberg is one of the best mods I have done. You will not believe how much it effects deep snow performance. Loosing a few pounds while doing the mod is just a bonus. When I did the mod I straightened my cooler and I would recommend doing it, some people don't but it looks so much better to do it right. In the name of weight I don't have a snow flap or tail light either and I haven't had any problems with cooling. Other people riding with you will complain on the trail but I just let em by.

As far as no seat I don't miss it at all. I am running an 8" RSI riser so my bars are to high to be sitting anyway. If are a mountain rider and only ride the trails to get to the good stuff then think about how much you really sit down. When boondocking its so nice to not have a seat to step over when jumping from rail to rail. I am way to cheap to spend $300 on a boss seat that I never sit on and the stock seat is ****in heavy.

Here is a pic of my current setup

On a 08 this is what I would do and the order to do it in according to best performance for the money.
First ditch the insulation and snow flap/ unless you ride ice.

1. slp can

2. Power claw and new style tunnel

3. Full slp pipe, PCIII or PCV and egts

4. BDX DD light

5. BDX intake - will take a diff fuel map.

6. The bdx oil delete installed how they said cost me $1800 after it wiped out the crank. Not sure if I will be going back, If I do it will be done different. you drop about 3 lbs with the delete but your also are not packing an extra gallon of oil in the tank, about 8lbs worth. It ran stronger of bottom with it.

7. Something with the seat.

8. mesh hood.

The oil delete is only really worth the oil tank and pump. The oil is either in the oil tank or in the fuel tank you dont get credit for loosing weight in oil. If you mix fuel you are now one quart less in fuel capacity. One would have to pack an extra quart if there is any worry about filling up durring the day. The oil tank is only a little over 2 quarts. The idea of the injection pump is less oil is used when it is at idle and more at full throttle where it is needed.

I don't think I could ride without a seat... when you are creeping around a tree or something along those lines on a small side hill its nice to have a seat so lean a knee against, also I think it would be tough to do some sick down hill pow turns without a seat... but thats just me, I don't have any issues jumping from board to board with a seat on though.
