pull the trigger or keep lookin'

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forum. I have always ridden polaris but am looking into making the switch to ski doo. I live in the rockies and will be riding in the mountains. Ive done a lot of research and it seems like the best sled that will fit my budget is an 06 summit 800 144. Ive ridden a couple 155 polaris's and they seem big. I'm thinking a 144 should do good enough. I'm not trying to go up super steep stuff but i want it to still be good and maneuverable in powder.

The hard part is finding the reliable 2006 summit. I cant find any that are worth looking at. What i did find is a 2007 summit x 800 144. It has 1800 miles on it and it looks very clean. Ive got him down to $3200. Which i think is a pretty good deal. The only problem is that peopIe say the ptek is junk. Crank bearings, powervalves, and clutch.

I'm going to go take a look at it later today or tomorrow morning. What should I be looking at besides all the normal stuff when looking at a sled? I read if theres grease near the primary clutch thats a bad sign. what else? I'm very weary about getting this sled but the price is right. If its clean and looks good would you buy it for $3200? How much would it cost to fix all the bugs that the 07 has? What would you do to fix them? Thanks a ton -Nick

This may be a little late since you were going last night, but you need to ask about the crank for sure. If the crank has not been replaced or updated then stay away from it. 2007 was the first year of the PTEK and Ski Doo made the tolerances too tight on the crank bearings causing them to seize up. They had an update, but not everyone had it done. If the owner doesn't know if it was updated, you can take the VIN and have a dealer run it to see if the update was performed by Ski Doo. That won't tell you if the crank has been replaced by someone other than Ski Doo though.

That does sound like a good deal if its clean. Look over the flying nun and check for bends. Easiest way to tell is by the silencer. The aluminum that runs parallel with the sled will be bent if its been crashed.
Grab ahold of the primary and try to wiggle it side to side. If it has play in it the clutch will need rebuilt.
At 1800 miles I wouldn't worry about the crank. If it was to tight it would of already blown up. Not saying it couldn't still happen but I doubt it will be from too tight of a case. im 3300 miles on my stock not updated 07 crank.
Id buy it and just ride it. Keep an eye out for an 07 non X or XRS track and pull and go! My 07 has been trew hell and back and keeps on trucking. I bought the exact same sled as you in 08. 2007 X 144, 300 miles. I paid 7200 then so 3200 seems cheap to me ha. Oh and with that track and the power that 800r puts out be ready for some knarly wheelies out of a stock sled. Or at least mine did.

well after looking at the sled the crank was the least of my worries. The thing was beat. The headlight was loose, electric start was broken, it got hit under the clutch and bent up some metal, and one ski was pushed back from hitting something. I offered him 2800 and he said no until i drove away. 5 mins down the road and he called me saying he would take the 2800. I still walked away from the deal... had a bad feeling. What sled would you get for around 3k? I'm down for any brand/model. something like a 700 or 800 144-155

What state r u in? I have a 2006 151 that I was maybe thinking about selling ,never even came out of the garage last year

Lucky you walked away. Sounds like that sled was abused. Bent nuns are a deal breaker. He was a fool not to take the $2800. Something will turn up. $3000 is a bottom dollar price on a nicer 2006 800 and if one pops up you wont be the only one looking at it. A 151" track would do the job too and there might be more of that track length for sale. I'd keep on the quest for a 07 or 06 rev they handle great. Good luck.
