pull start problems

So last year I had my pull start fail on me and I bought a new assembly and it worked well for about a dozen rides then yesterday it failed on me again. Any ideas of what I might have done wrong on my installation to have it fail so soon? Thanks for all good replies.

What happens is the pawl (plastic part that catches the metal basket) gets hot from the exhaust and looses shape or gets weaker and then slips when you try to start it. A simple fix to help the heat issue is to put furnace tape on the outside of the pull starter assembly. I also added a flat washer under each of the three bolts holding the basket onto the flywheel to create more contact surface.

I've been using these aftermarket pawl kits and can't tell the difference from oem.

Cheap enough to keep a spare or two on hand

Is there a different starter assembly that ski doo has available to fix this problem? My sled is an 04 800. I doo have an after market can on it. Thanks for the tip on the heat tape and the after market part.

There is a guy on here that goes by the name OX and he sells a all aluminim one that works awsome and will not be affected by the heat might want to try giving his a shot, I think they run about 250 bucks but if your new one only lasted a couple of rides it would be worth it.
