Pull Start Handle / Knee Conflict

The one complaint I have had about my 2004 600HO is banging my knee against the pull start handle. If you don't know what I am talking about your inseam is less than 36 inches. You may not think this is any big deal, but a full day of banging your knee against the handle is painful at best and the handle keeps me from having good control with my knees. Wearing knee pads help but are bulky.

Current work a round ideas:

1. Most of the time I just pull the handle out and wedge it against the hood latch, crude but it works.

2.Have considered mounting a small hook on the hood to hang the handle from.

3. Could the handle be recessed further into the body?

Any ideas from the collective mind would appreciated.
Thank you.

change your foot peg position! inseem 36" wow
mine is 34 and i lowered mine down 1.5" and back 3" made a huge difference in comfort! and i feel much more stable on my machine!

The guy I bought mine from had the same problem.

He made a smaller handle from a piece of wood probaly a bit of a broom handle wich was small enough to fit completely in the handle recess, he also let a bit of rope out of it so he could pull on the dangling bit to get the handle out.

It did not look very good but it worked.

i feel your pain too...ive just been to lazy to come up with a better idea.if you solve the issue let us know! i think it comes from riding moto, always trying to get farther forward, moving the pegs back wont solve mee troubles...

I took off my handle and replaced it with a 6"+ loop of moto tie-down strap that is figure-8 knotted together with the starter rope. I prefer to wear kneepads anytime I ride the machine since my knees always rub/bang on the fuel tank cutouts and it is painful. The starter handle was also a problem if I was sitting while slowly coming off a long steep hill climb. It held one knee off and made a little balance issue:eek: not at those pitches, thank you!

...

Coming from someone that doesn't actually ride a machine but sees plenty of people.
If the handle is hitting your knee then maybe you are having other issues with the size of your ride.
I know Tony loves his seat that he had custom made that is taller than the AD Boivin seat. He took it into a bike shop and they did an amazing job.
So maybe adjusting your seat height either up or down may be an option.

Also Idahoskiguy are you coming to Hawkfest?????

I designed a pretty fancy aluminum handle to solve that problem last year, never made it to production because of more important problems to get out of the way...

Will try to dig it out and show it to you guys.

cut and chop

I just took a saw zall to the handle and dive grinder to clean up. Just cut the handle where the two sides come around to the base where rope knot is, basically making the old D handle like a lawn mower T handle, a little harder to grab but hides away in the plastic well, away from knee contact.

Almost forgot in all the dreamyness.

Allways wanted to cut a groove and drill a hole in hood to secure handle away from knee, I'd practice starting without handle before cutting it up, those Rotax's can be stubborn sometimes exp. the 503.

During the off season I went in for treatment for to much enjoyment upsetting dim witted sledders in ciber space and not enough time in bed with my wife. I think i may be relapsing O CRAP HERE COMES MY W

welcome back poacher, or to the new site anyway, I have the same problem with my wife too, gotta go. LOL

I tried to pick a fight with a two-moto guy in another thread but he got frustrated and bailed to qwick. I still have not been able to take ICR to school as of yet either. It seems that We can never make the same 4m rides, oneday It'll happen.

This is a great and simple fix......

I just took a saw zall to the handle and dive grinder to clean up. Just cut the handle where the two sides come around to the base where rope knot is, basically making the old D handle like a lawn mower T handle, a little harder to grab but hides away in the plastic well, away from knee contact.

Used this fix and it solved the "knee / handle conflict".

Thank you all for the input.
