Pull 08 Diamond Drive Cover without removing unit from sled?

Can you remove the DD cover on an 08 without removing the diamond drive from the sled? I appologise if this has been covered in the past, but the search didnt turn up what I was looking for. Any tips for getting the cover of with it still on the sled?

Just took the cover off on my 09 with it still in the sled. very easy. I don't know why guys think it is easier out of the sled  It is wide open and easy to access. It is less to take apart with it still in. If you leave it in you don't have to loosen the track and re-adjust it. I have also done it on an 06 M7. Same thing. I would assume it is the same on yours.

?

I dont want to mess with taking out the "long bolt" if i dont have to. What is the plan of attack for spliting the case with it in the sled? Just a flathead screwdriver?

I just had the cover off my '07 M8 two weeks ago. It's not hard except for the bottom two bolts. They will take a 1/4 inch socket and flex nuckle and patience as they are hard to get at. Lay sled over on a padded stand after you have drained the oil and flushed the gearcase to make it easier to work on. The cover needs a few light raps with a soft nose hammer to loosen the silicone. The cover has two slots top and bottom that let you stick a bent straight screwdriver in to pry off cover. Not too hard, just takes two evenings as I like to let the new gasket cure before filling with oil.

The cover can be taken off the '08 with the DD in the sled. Having done the remove/clean/install now five times, I think it is easier to pull the whole unit out and properly diassemble it on a clean workbench.

There is no "long bolt" on a '08. Just need a 16-mm socket with about 2' of extensions on it to reach in from the brake side and remove the short bolt that attaches the track driveshaft to the DD output shaft.

The bolt is really a non issue and is one of the more easy steps in the entire process.
