Pros and cons of piping my XLT?

I've been trying to decide if I should put triple pipes on my 97 xlt. I've done a lot of research and it seems that a lot of people have a hell of a time tuning there sleds once on and never seem to run right. Not sure if he performance upgrades are worth the headache and reliability factors. Also is SLP the best option? Any feedback would be great.
 
i never had an xlt myself but buddies did and the tripple pipes did'nt seem that bad to tune and they make a huge hp gain i would think get them jetted and clutched right and they will be sweet

the only other thing to think about is major elv. changes if you ride a pretty set elv. then get a set

my buddies ran slp pipes don't know about other brands

just a few other wedge tips :face-icon-small-win
raise the seat and bars
gear down, long track and maybe raise the front up some
good luck
ps all this is geared toward mountain riding
 
Pro's make the sled seem like it has some actual power and torque.

Cons the bottom end is pretty anemic. I have had 3 XLT's and 1 XCR all with SLP triple pipes. Two of the XLT's ran for 10K miles piped and didnt miss a beat the other did didnt fare near as well. The other XLT granaded the bottom end at 2500 miles rod through the block. The XCR blew up with about 600 miles on it crank bearing on the PTO side went out. If your sled already has high miles id go through the bottom end first. SLP made a wide bearing kit know as the "TOUGHBOY" kit for these sleds. Id recommend doing the mod for it if you plan on piping the sled.

I dont really know why people had such a problem tuning these sleds either. The middle cylinder runs hotter and needs to run a larger jet, but other hat that its really not that bad to do. Mine always ran extremely well, they do require you to keep up with the jetting but so does any piped piston port sled. That being said I loved my piped XLT for what it was its a pretty quick little sled.


There are also AAEN, PSI pipes out there for these and the Ultra rare LRM pipes... If you can get the LRM pipes run em.. you wont find a better set. The PSI's were unbelievably Loud but seemed to make good power. Never seen a set of aaen's ran so I cant speculate what those are like.

hell yea!

i have a 97 xcr 600 tripple piped, clutched, and extended track. i didint do the work myself. i purchased it this way, but who'm ever did it, did a great job. this little sled really rips. she dont start to engage until about 4-5000rpm but then your off like a bullet. very responsive. i love the sled.
 
We ran SLP triple pipes on a 95 XLT SKS 600. Once it was dialled in it ran very well. For a strange reason I had to use 25 pilot jets to get good throttle response for 4500 to 7000 feet. In other words you will have to spend some time tuning to get it where you want it but definitely worth it imo.
 
Thanks for the info, I'll look for some on ebay. As far as the SLP pipes go what should I be looking out for when buying them? Seems like I've noticed individual stingers and also 3 into 1 silencer? Possibly I'm wrong but seems like I noticed that.
 
They came both ways. I believe the 3 into one came out later and were supposed to be a bit quieter. The 3 individual stingers were glass packed but were not that loud.
