Proper break-in of new motor?

What is the proper way to break-in a freshly rebuilt motor? As in--
extra oil in fuel (and how much), low rpm runs with short bursts of speed, how many miles to do this, and so on.
Thanks for the info fellas.

xtra oil and run it like you stole it--the only sled i ever broke in easy blew a motor at 200 miles:mad::eek:
ps: got 1200 miles on 2nd motor and rode it like i stole it from the first ride on the new mill--no easy break ins for me again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep

Warm it up real good, then ride as usual, and ride it hard!

After a good run, let it cool down, to dead cold, and re-torque the head bolts., then you should be good.

Some say use extra oil, and some don't...I do.

Like TA says, ride it like you stole it,no prolonged throttle positions, lots of variation in the RPM,I tell people,"ride like it an idiot" some people are better at this than others.;) On the first tank I like to put a bit of oil in the gas, just insure that the pump doesn't have an air bubble in it,and to check and see if the oil is being used at the proper amount. Some 06 revs I've done,I've found that the oil consumption wasn't enough, possible explanation of the engine failure.

In and out of the throttle through one tank of gas. I avoid any prolonged full throttle for the first tank. Then ride it like you stole it!

Some say you should use mineral oil for the few first tanks and then you can switch over to synthetic. This help the rings seat better. Also don't hold it pinned for the first tank of fuel. Extra oil in the gas for the first tank is also a good idea.

Thank you Summitdude

That article was so inforative that I read it twice to take it all in. I have heard sooooo many different theorys on 2or4 strokes that it made me ask this ?
I just rebuilt an older 580 Cat motor, and just bought an 07 Yammy Phazer. Yammy says avoid prolonged rpms for the first 0-100 miles to not above 8,000rpm, then 100-300 miles to avoid prolonged operation above 10,000rpm, then after 300 miles, go for it. (page 7-2 of owners manual).
Have heard that 2-smokes take a totally different process to "properly" seat rings, and such.

Thanks to all who have added to my ?

Im a very firm beliver in RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!! when breaking a motor in. always break it in like your gonna ride it the rest of her life:beer;

Your sled will NEVER make full power or last long before needing a rebuild if you baby it a lot during breaking. I laugh when I see some manuals that say to just idle it for X minutes during breakin. Rings seat by having combustion gas pressure push them out on the cylinder wall, and that mostly happens when on the throttle and not just idling.
