Probe question?

Is a 200 CM probe long enough?

Thanks!

I have the biggest heaviest probe I could find, 320 CM long (10.5ft), stainless construction. The 200 Cm is around 6.6 ft long. The probes that come in the shovel handles and such are too light weight / short to be used in avy rescues. No experience there, but that is what I have been told by the instructor when I took the classes.

Just some info, but it would probably be wise to get another opinion from someone who has done a lot of work in avy rescue and use there recommendation.

On another note, stay away from plastic shovels. Get a good metal shovel that has a reinforced connection for the tube handle on the blade.

Great info! You have place you like to shop this stuff on line?

I have stopped buying online when I can and buy local. Support the locals! It is sometimes difficult to do, as there might be large price differences, but most times the local shops will bring the price down, and you actually get to see where the profit of the shop is going. Right back into your own community. Just some thoughts, plus they can steer you in the right direction as far as gear is concerned. I think there are a couple of shops in the North Bend area.

200mm works for me! :face-icon-small-win

Well I guess I will need to remember that when I get buried in an avalanche. I will be tossing and turning in the snow thinking, only 6.5ft pole, only 6.5ft pole.

Found this stat
Probe length is less important, as less than two percent of avalanche victims buried more than six feet are found alive.

So, I guess just don't chince on quality.
