Pro X 440/800 Mountain Conversion

Hello All,

I am new here but looking to convert my 2003 440/800 trail converted sled into a setup for the mountains this winter. I have some leads on a skid and track. I have the option of either a 151 or a 159 and am looking for opinions. From what I can see bigger is better.

Also, Any other input on changes to make the sled better for out west. From what I read, mount the skid as far down and back as I can.

Not sure about side hilling capabilities but in my novice experience probably won't matter.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Good idea? Bad idea? etc

Thank You

You will be super happy when its done.. get some help with mounting the rear skid though.. there is a lot more to it then just down and back..

Thank you

Thanks for input. I will actually not be doing the conversion myself but rather a shop in town who has done many (from my understanding). Just wanted to get any feed back as to why I wouldn't do it. I donot find many that have done it through forum searches.

Fairly novice in the mountains but know I donot want to return with my shortie (121).

Just wanted input on things to make sure he does as well as any pointers on other mods (narrow front end) and how that's may be done and if worth it for novice.

Guy in shop mentioned that he can do it, mainly just making sure procedurally I am doing what is right.

honestly, the mountain conversation isn't hard. You basically have a short track edge chassis. Extending the track and narrowing the front isn't hard at all. To narrow the front, just get shorter tie rods and radius rods from an edge or get custom ones. You can pick up the track and rear skid from an edge fairly easy. An IQ skid will work, but the arms are slightly narrower so you would need some sort of space to take up the extra space. Not sure what year you have, but you might want an edge tank so you can carry more fuel. If you do, i have the tank and proX console for it.. I will help ya out as much as i can if you need. Good luck with it. You will love it when you are done.

Nice project and one of my favorite setups, might as well do a 3 inch while your at it

Thanks again

I have access to both edge and iq chassis and like you mentioned, I was told with the iq I would need spacers which my shop/parts guy mentioned as well. He is basically a local guy who has a shop and all he does is buy running sleds, tears down, catologues and sells parts. He indicated could do swap for me in next few weeks before he gets swamped and I wanted to take advantage of that!

I can make it pretty as I have a lot ofnautobody experience, I can post airbrush work when I am done. Looks are for show however :)

I don't know this guy well yet but would have everything I need to swap.

My decision now is the 151 or 159. ??? Thoughts?? Both skids and tracks he has available are in great shape. 2 inch lugs. Not sure if challenger or not but maybe doesn't matter

I see tracks USA has summer blowout In either size for 300 bucks new as well in Polaris type IV. Why so cheap as compared to a challenger?

To answer other question sled was originally an 03 prox 440 race sled (rite seat etc).

Assuming you were talking for front radius arms off of an edge rmk then, again access to parts so will have do that as well

3 inch I am sure would be sweet but the occasional ride here in Minnesota I imagine would be pretty tough on it as well as assume more work to make that jive in sled? Heard of drop and roll but donot fully understand

Last thing, imagine w that much stretch would need custom tunnel extension

Oh Minnesota, NO 3 inch. The snows not even that deep

I really liked my Polaris Series 4 159" track on my Edge, but I never ran anything different until going 174CE. I took the sway bar out and narrowed my ski stance 2" from stock. That made it really easy to lay over, and sidehilling is now enjoyable.

Yes to run a 3" paddle you would have to do a drop and roll of the chaincase. If you ride MN I wouldn't go that route. 2" is still a lot of fun out here and would be better on trail. Plus the D&R is time consuming, therefor expensive to have someone else do for you.

You will need a tunnel extension, but they are not a big deal.

Narrowing involves running shorter radius rods, and if you go much narrower you'll need to shorten the tie rods. The RMK trailing arms will be lighter, but I don't know if you nesecarily have to use RMK trailing arms to narrow the suspension up front. Holz (at least they used to) and a guy on here (Wimpy) offer nice radius & tie rod sets of whatever length you want.

Does the 03 ProX have the over engine steering setup? Or was that 04?

04 was the "over the motor" steering setup.

I think I will take the 159 and see how that works. I didn't think the spacers would be that big of a deal for the skid. I figured might as well go as big as I can.

I will look up wimpy and see what I can find n radius arms. It sounds like that is something I should definitely don
