We ride 6000ft to 8000ft and run 10-60s or 10-62s in the primary clutch depending on sled. Going to be riding 8000 to 10,000ft for a few days and was hoping some of you high elevation guys might have done some testing and could offer advice?... We have a 163 and a 155.
Thanks!

i run 19/42 gears (stock 20/42) and 10 62's at 8000ft 163. I think you would be fine with 10-60's

What 2XM3 said - 10-60's should work for you.

2XM3 - what results did you see going to 19:42? Are you seeing better shift out on your primary and did you see track speeds improve in long steep climbs?

Thanks.

I ride an area that is primarily around 9000 to 9500 feet and run 10 60s in my 155. I switched to a Team Black purple in the secondary and am getting around 8100 on climbs through untracked snow. It is funny how it varies from sled to sled though...I know a few guys who are running 10=62s with no problems. Good luck.

I have 19/42 in my 155 w/10-62s. My husband runs 19/43 w/10-60s in his 163. he tried the black/purple but likes the stock spring better. He was thinking of running 10-60s in mine and 10-58s in his for the trip but not sure. I'm thinking we will ride in the 9500ft range mostly.

Should be fine the way you are with 60's or 62's. If anything change to next stiffer secondary spring.

I picked up my dad's Pro 163 in Towgatee last week and rode it a bit, I believe it had 10-62's in it. Grant it the sled was brand new and not broke in, but those were way to much it seemed, on the trail it would drop to 7800rpm. Elevation there is around 9-10,000ft I believe.

I was gonna put some 10-60's in it for him, for that elevation, but wondering if I should go to 10-58's????

What do you guys think? He is about 250lbs with gear.

Thanks

Actually only a very small gain, picked up about 50-100 rpm at best, but snow is getting better so really hard to tell. I'm 6'6" and about 295 dressed. My friend (about 160) jumped on and 8300 same hill same day. :face-icon-small-sho

I really would wait till it has about 100 miles on it...mine changed quite a bit at about 65-75 miles, picked up rpm. imho i'm runnin the 62's at 8000ft

What secondary spring is everyone running, Polaris chart claims purple/black for 8-10?

My Hubbie said the blk/purple is too stiff. He is 260lbs.. Said he wishes they made one a little stiffer than stock on first # but same second #. He was having issues with it wondering around between 7800 & 8200 climbing freshies. The blk/purple made it hold steady but would only hit 7900 when he stabbed it and then slowly climb to 8050. That is when he went back to stock spring and 10-60s and says it works good. It holds between 8000 and 8200 now but still wonders on the top a bit. He wishes they had 10-61s and a spring between stock and b/p. He thinks a little steeper helix may fix the little bit of wondering on the top but says its close enough.

Stock works good when your only 120lbs! We geared mine down to a 19 for better throttle response and belt life but that is it. We are boondockers so the little loss in track speed wide open is not a disadvantage. We are usually just holding it pinned for short climbs and maneuvering in deep pow.

Team tied will fix the wandering right now...buddy has one 8200..holds like a rock steady..but Im leavin mine as is...little grinding and a scale and you have 61's...:face-icon-small-coo

I'm running 60's at 10-11K now with a Team Tied. If a guy is 250 he might need 58's. I'm thinking of grinding my 60's down to 59's to get more consistancy climbing.

10-60's with black purple secondary spring, ran from 7k'-10k' highest elevation was 9580. running 8250 rpms all day

black/purple should have raised rpms..both low and high since its a stiffer spring, a couple delrin washers under the spring seat should fix the wandering rpms at full throttle, and so far with adding more helix the stock secondary spring cant hold up and its slipping the secondary.. the stock helix doesnt have enough initial angle...and maybe too much finish angle above about 6000 ft. from what testing I have done so far...I would think something in the 60/40/.36 up to about 8000 ft and then drop to a 58/38/.36 up above that..black/purple secondary, and your choice of a belly heavy weight..(11 series, belly busters or slp mtx weights....) would also try a slp blue/pink and green/pink primary spring with that combo as well...thinking might need the green/pink to get the bottom end real snappy again....oh..and so far..8300 pulls best from what I have seen..only problem is its real easy to get a rev limiter bog if you unload the track full throttle on a hill....if you know its gonna do it, and expect it..its not a biggy..performance wise..on back to back test (two identical stock 163 sleds) the one clutched to pull 8100 rpm on a steep deep climb just barely moving at the top (rider looking to start sidehilling or turn out)vrs the 8300 rpm sled which goes over the top with plenty of ground speed , and the rider thinking the hill wasnt even a challenge........
