Pro-800 Cylinder skirts breaking?

From what I can tell the culpret breaking cylinder skirts, is the piston.
My 2011 800 Pro has 883 miles left with two years left on the warranty. I don't want to do an after market upgrade that will void the warranty. So my questions are..
#1 Is there any kind of test that will tell me my pistons are out of spec.
#2 Will a compression test tell me anything.
#3 If I paid my dealer to pull the heads, and cylinders off, can they inspect
the pistons, and cylinders to see if they do, or do not meet specs,
and if they don't, would that be covered under warranty.
This may all seem silly but I don't relish the thought of driving 1000+ miles one way to go snowmobiling, and have an engine failure, and know I should have had this checked out before I left.:face-icon-small-fro
Thanks.:face-icon-small-coo

........
My 2012 just turned 1,550 miles of mostly WOT mountain climbing, no issues.

Same here, 2012 w/ just under 1000 miles in same conditions.

In the grand scheme of things, I'm sure the overall failure rate of 2012's sold vs. those that actually failed is very small.

that won't tell you anything either. there is no way to know tell it goes, if it goes. mine had 2000 miles on it before i lost a skirt. piston looked great. another buddy lost a rod bearing at 2500 miles. pistons looked outstanding. the only way to know if you are within spec is to measure the pistons and cylinders.

800 miles

800 miles mine broke going down hill cylinder skirt pto side chunked off and broke piston before punching out the bottom of the crankcase! Love the sled, but "polaris not always the way out!"

900 miles on my 12 PRO. Original belt, runs strong. The only problem was a weak hose clamp that allowed coolant to drip on my TPS. Replaced clamp and filled connector with diaelectric grease. Pull and go! Big grin on my face!

A leak down test will give you an idea how the rings are holding up. First sign of a problem.

might show a sign of an issue but that doesn't necessarily mean the skirt is going to break. or it could have results "as good as new" and your skirt could break the next ride out. they are separate issues. mine was running really good all day in 1.5+ feet of fresh powder. right up until the skirt went through the bottom of my case.

If your motor fails a leak down test it gives you good reason to check pistons, rings, and cylinder skirts.
Last year,My 2011 had two sets of pistons put in it(failed leak downs) and no skirt issue, but shy of 3000 mi. she gernaded. I know what you are talking about.

--Use the warranty as a selling point to get rid of the sled.

--If your not averaging 40:1 or better on oil consumption, the crank
will likely have limited life

--What good is a warranty of they replace OEM junk parts with OEM
junk parts?

--Sell it while it runs or else let it blow then sell it with a "fresh" OEM
motor

--Or keep it till it blows, get a new motor and then replace the OEM
pistons with a drop in kit. RKT sells just piston kit or a piston and
head kit which handles ethanol fuel.

u guys making me nervous just snowchecked a 13 poo coming off 09 m8 8000kms without any problems.

Any one know of many crank issues on the Pro 800 ? I mean not caused by a top end failure. That Poo issue sees to be minimized, no ?

My piston skirt broke on my 12' while in Wyoming. I had 600 miles on it. Was just putting down the trail before I even got to the hill. Dragged it back out and grabbed my 11' a buddy brought up from Utah. I just plan on owning two Pros with warrranties so I can have the sickest sled to ride at all times. I can't ride anything else nearly as good as I can ride the Pro. Polaris is suppose to be sending an entire shortblock to replacee mine that took out the reeds, cases and cylinder when the chunk of piston shot out the bottem. It sounded like I had a little piece of metal in my clutch but when I had a runaway idle as I coasted to a stop I knew it was a little more serious. Mine is the only one out of 6 in the group that failed.

Cranks have been solid. There have however been a handful that have lost a lower rod bearing. Not many. Most failures have been breaking a piston.

OIL ?

On my 2012 it came out of the factory with the oil consumption set to 89:1 and on my 2011 Insult it was set at 78:1. I did correct this issue and now they both run at 50:1 on both sleds on an average ride. All this in hopes it helps out the crank and it cant hurt the pistons. I saw some talk about oiling a while back on this forum. Any ideas? I don't like the wait and see if it going to happen concept.

There's another option available guys: a class action lawsuit against Polaris for defective product. IMHO this frequency of failure is defective and I believe reasonable people would agree. Just saying....
