After a great ride in the U.P. over the weekend, I pulled to the back of my buddies trailer to load. Sled dies. After investigation, the primary clutch did not fully disengage. 06 X-Fire 700 with 2200 miles. What would cause this? Cover bushing?

could be the cover bushing or moveable sheave bushing... but did the spring break in a few causing no pressure to push weights down.... just take the cover off the primary, pull the belt off and pull the spring out and then you can move the primary by hand to see whats broke or binding.

I will take a look tonight. If it is a broken spider, what should I look for? Is it physically broken in half?

Just to note, when the clutch locked we fiddled with it and you could hear a slight "pop" to fully disengage it. It loaded into the trailer fine. Also when I transfered the sled from his trailer to mine to head home, it worked fine. If the spider is broken, can the clutch temperarily come out of it?

Look towards the center of the spider. Typically they have a hair line crack right at the threads. If it starting to hang up it will come and go a bit. Once it lets go completely your done.

Couple of pictures of my old four arm spider that let go.

Okay, I took the clutch appart tonight. I discovered that two of the weights were toast. There where large grooves wore into them on the surface that interfaces with the rollers. And of course the rollers on the spider were shot. What would cause this??

I have toasted a few rollers. Everytime I have done it, it was because I got the primary to hot. and the rollers have shims on the sides so they don't get into the aluminum of the spider. Well it will melt in there and then start to hang up. Then it takes the bearing materail out of the roller then the weight and roller start to stick.

Your best option is a new clutch. I have tried to rebuild these several times. Sometimes it works ok. But never the same. And most of the time it will leave you out in the boonies when you don't expect it.
