Primary clutch on 01 Mountain cat??

My cousin has an 01 mountain cat. The fixed sheave has started to crack and he is wanting to replace the clutch. I have looked through tons of years and part #'s and the only year that is the same is the 01.. I am pretty sure it is a 30mm taper which tons of years have the same taper, but what the difference in the 9 tower clutches over the years they were made?? What year clutch will work on this sled or is 01 just some odd clutch and an 01 needs to be used??? Can anyone shed some light on this for me?? :)

So basically, if its a 9 tower and has a 30mm taper it should be fine??

Anyone know why the difference in part #'s for the fixed sheave from 01 to other years with the same taper??

I just want to make sure when I get him a 30mm tapered 9 toer, its going to for sure work.. I am not familiar with Cats at all..:face-icon-small-ton

When I rode an 01 mountain cat 800, I used a polaris p-85 primary. It was on the sled when I bought it, but I had very good luck with it. Sorry I don't have any idea what spring or weights it had, that seems like a long time ago!

i have been looking for info on this exact thing!!! will the P85 bolt right on or do i need to have the taper modified?

9 tower will work, 01 and back to 94 except fan, i just put a 9 tower on a 04 F5, clutch was a much heavier but it did the job, i have a few more 9 towers kicking around, and maybe some 6 tower, but i think the 6's are the 33mm taper that i have, i do have a 6 tower that has dents in the part where the belt rides not sure how it got there but the clutch is still in good shape just eats belts haha

Whatever you do don't waste your time trying to replace just the cracked fixed sheave. It will leave you stranded sooner rather than later.

clutch

as long as the sled is not an 800 all the 30mm tapers will fit the p-85 will also fit .The 01 800 takes a deep 30mm taper clucth

Clutch

Forget the 9 towers call your dealer and ask for a 6 tower race clutch off a 440 for the same year. You will need weights / spring and thats it. Mucho better !

Why do you say this?

Depending the miles on the clutch they tend to wear out pretty fast on those years.

so by the time you pull the spider off and attempt to reuse it with the movable sheave the entire clutch will still be loose, the buttons guides in the movable sheave. And you will have good chance of a broken spider.

For some reason trying to pull the spider and do a rebuild works for a couple hundred miles. But for a reasonable cost you can upgrade the clutch to the fixed pin style and get a lot more miles out of it.

I would bet you have about 100 bucks into a new fixed sheave. If you do some looking around you can pick up a fixed pin clutch for around 250 and have a pretty good clutch.

I tried to replace a part here and a part there for years on my 900. All it did was cost me and my riding buddies riding time pulling the damn thing back to the trailer.

So anyway, I have tried to completed piece meal repairs over the years and typically come out on the loosing end.

sounds like u need a knew clutch this is what i have done to 2 of my 01 800buy this part # 0746-137 this is a fixed pin clutch that has the right taper.it came on the T660 turbo sled not sure which year though. then to make this as reliable as the new fixed weight clutches take it to a machine shop and have the clucth machined so the o-rings on the weight bolts are recessed about half the thickness of the o-ring and order weight bolts for an 08 or newer clutch. You will need the newer bolts after the machine work because the are just a little shorter to make up for the recessed o-rings.You can run the clutch with out the machine work but i guess they tend to throw the orings off.Or u can order a new clutch for that year sled and it will be the same as you have now.The fixed pin clutch is a way better setup.Hope this helps

Thank you guys for all the help and explanations.. He has found another 9 tower clutch he will be using.. If this one fails, I will put him on a search for something better..
