Are they really needed or just a way to give the media something to talk about. What would happen if polling and the releasing of such info was not allowed. The candidates may need to talk to everyone instead of concentrating on certain groups. People may need to actually be required to watch debates and do research on their own to become an informed voter, at least to some extent. I'm really getting tired of all this talk on polling data and what it means. Yea I know my candidate is behind in most polls, just trying to get some talk on this.

Me too! I means nothing ! I was noticing the other evening after the debate the "polls " where showing a win for Biden within minutes .This struck me funny as I heard this as I was passing through the room while working on getting the kids in bed and so on. This made me think who are these people casting the votes so quickly (Internet of course ) after all I would guess most other americans like myself are busy with the evenings bussiness and don't have time for such B.S. I know it was not people like my parents they dont have internet and would not use it for such purposes anyway. this got me thinking WHO are these people ! they seem to have seen a different debate than I did thats for sure! I was left only to think it must be the people who have nothing better to do with there time than jerk off and participate in online polls ! SAD ! I think the real americans dont get into this kinda stuff because they are busy living ,raising kids ,running bussiness' ,ect. I hope this is the case and these polls do not acuratly reflect the IQ of the average voter!

The polls are used by the media to justify their opinion.
They can be very powerful tools to influence the week minded and those that are on the fence. If the poll says that Obama is up 20 points in your district, the person who might vote for McCain may just stay home figuring why waste my time. We lost anyway.
However, polls have been known to backfire and do just the opposite also. It can fire the base up to get the vote out even harder.
All in all, it just gives the media something to talk about.
If you take a poll in a conservative district you get a conservative stance, if you take it in a liberal district, you get a liberal view.

Let's see here, a CNN poll is always going to favor Obama and a Fox poll McCain. It is a tactic that does try to influence people, but, it doesn't always work. Keep the faith, take friends with you when you vote because
this year is going to be very tight!

btw, I am working in Florida (been here a while) so I changed my registration
to be able to vote here where my vote will mean more to the electoral college
that it would have in Idaho where I'm pretty sure McCain will win anyway!

Got back to the hotel last Thursday, turned on Fox and they had a poll showing Palin won 86% to 12%.
Changed to ABC, they show Biden won.
It's all garbage. If you are spineless enough to let polls change your opinion, you should move.
I have some core value/opinions that determine who I vote for. No one matches them perfectly, but there is no contest who gets my vote this year and the name is not Obama or Gregoire!!!!!

I'm sure that the polls sway the masses. most people are to lazy to check out the issues them selves so they listen to the polls and figure that it must be right. A lot of people or naive. I agree with you on ending the polls
You are mixing two different types of polls. You have one which is a "phone-in" or internet poll which has no statistical revelance. Then you have the random type Gallup polls which actually are a snap shot of the race at that type. Media of course uses them but the campaign staff also use them to their advantage.

Polls are like accountants - they can make a case for anything they want but working the numbers to their favor.... polls are basically worthless for public information - only used to bias and sway.

Polls are BS. They work to sway the vote. The dumb heads that don't know how to vote. People will vote for the winner, Sheep, BAA BAA we follow each other. Vote for McCain, Palin.

This is not about the canidates its about the voters in this country ! If I had my way I would shoot 3 of the 4 and let Sara run the show would it not be refreshing to have a president that still resembled a human being !
