Politics....Republican Senator in Mass!!! WTF!

First time in almost 38yrs! Being a M******* from Mass, I am absolutely surprised by the recent win by Brown over Coakley. Why post on a snowmobiling forum??? I have watched in awe the past few years at what I call "the Liberalization of America" in complete disbelief. I never realized I was that far removed from "Main stream" USA?? That said, to shed some light on this win....National Health Plan will fail as well as a significant shift in the power struggle within the Senate. If people don't realize it, it is typically Liberal Democrats that are advocating for shutting down riding areas, stiffer EPA restrictions, global warming etc....... This a HUMUNGOUS change in direction for the USA. Not a screaming Conservative here, but I do live a conservative's life.... My 2 cents.. Thanks!!

Great day for America. Once again there may be checks and balances as hoped for by the Founding Fathers

I was very pleased to see this victory! It is not only the "liberalization of America" that I don't like, but the "wussification of America!" I bet we will see a lot of Republican victories in the next election! Congress, and this president, are not paying any attention to the desires and beliefs of their constituents and they will pay at the polls.

finally a little light in the darkness. i heard jim cramer(mad money) today say he thinks this win could cause a rally on wall street. looks like the crap in the air in utah wasn't the only thing pushed out today.

I am equally, if not more dissapointed with the current crop of republicans as democrats. Most of the Republicans currently in Congress, along with Bush, oversaw one of the largest expansions in the size of government in the last 100 years. Many of the problems we are dealing with right now (deficits, wars, education, etc.) are at least in large part a result of republican policies over the last decade. Keep in mind that before Bush left office the projected deficit for 2010 was already $1.2 trillion.

I would love to see a real conservative run the government efficiently and effectively. But if recent history is any indication, both parties tend to spend a lot of money and expand the size of govt. The only difference is that one party, the reupublican party, says the govt. can't run anything, but continues to expand it. I didn't hear anyone screaming and hollering when the republican congress pushed through enormous expansions of Medicaid (govt healthcare!) just a few years ago that were basically handouts to the pharmaceutical industry.

As far as EPA restrictions, yeah as snowmobilers we may not always like tougher environmental standards and we are bound to fight some, but don't we need some sort of environmental regulations? Can you imagine what our country would be like without the Clean Air or Clean Water Acts? If the republicans had their way back in the 1970s, we wouldn't have either. Anyone who lives in the Salt Lake valley should understand the importance of regulating pollution. The world is dealing with the impacts of excessive pollution and the US should be leading the fight, not sitting on the sidelines. China is already starting to pass up US companies in the development of alternative energy technologies.

Healthcare is a serious problem. The current system is cleary unsustainable. The cost of healthcare in the U.S. is much higher than all other industrialised countries and we rank near the bottom in almost all meaningful measures of health. The % of gdp we spend on govt health care right now (50% of Americans already have govt healthcare through Medicaid, Medicare, etc.) is higher than what other countries spend on universal healthcare for their entire populations. The real solution is in the personal choices that people make. I would think that conservatives would be all about that, but whenever I see the tea party protests it looks like the fattest group of slobs I've ever seen.

I think one of our biggest problems is that we have become a lazy and complacent country. We have been living way above our means for a long time and there will be difficult adjustments if we want to get our fiscal house in orrder. Voting for republicans simply because democrats couldn't fix the country in one year is a ridiculous reason. I am glad to see the democrats lose their 60 seat majority, even though they never used it anyway and it was largely a fiction due to how moderate many of the democratic senators are. I hope that people consider the issues we are facing in a thoughtful and serious manner as we approach the midterm elections this year.

Isn't Jim Cramer one of the same people advising people to buy stock in AIG and the large banks right before the financial crisis?

Agreed

A bit verbose but some valid points. IN addition to the above, complacency, apathy, LOBBYIST! Finally, in the health field, we are starting to see that is more difficult for Sales reps to get into and pitch meds to Physicians. Hoping this is a sign of things to come. I for one, vote for the person and not the party. I am certain some would argue that is a mistake as well. Good insight DAN.

I believe the most positive outcome from the Massachusetts victory for the Republicans is some restoration in balance of power. I personally do not like to see either party hold a strong majority. When it comes to spending the dollars I give them every year I want any new program or expenditure to be thoroughly debated prior to passage.

Healthcare has need for improvement and spending control in this country. Over the course of my career, as a physical therapist, however, it is extremely rare to receive any increase in reimbursement from any insurance company. I believe most providers can echo the same. The current plan before congress, as I have read much of it and understand it, is not the solution. I am hopeful they can bring a better plan to the table.

AMEN!! When you running??

Couple more issues:

Majority of the jobs in the US are Government jobs with full retirement and insurance. Anyone look at the Public Employess Health Plan in Utah?? Lets see, they pay a $250 deductible, and 90% covered on major with low co-pays. And dont get me started on Retirement. They pay no Social Security and some can retire after 20 years of service with a 50% payout for the rest of their life.

So, the Government can run their own retirement and heallth insurance, but cant figire out why the public one sucks?? Lets see, because Social Security is a Welfare and Life Insurance Plan, not a Retirement. On Health Insuarnce, the rest of us are the ones picking up the bill for the non-insured. Anywya, not that hard to see what it wrong, but unfortunately for us, the ones in office have the better plan and dont need to make changes!! Put them on a National Healthcare plan and make their Retirement be Social Security, and then see if it can be managed. My guess is it would be just fine!!!

Problem is not the system, its the idiots running the system!! And I agree with Dan, Americans are lazy and greedy!!

I think it was a GREAT victory. Very suprised, Mass. is one of the most liberal states!

"Obama told Massachusetts voters that his efforts to pass health care legislation, regulate the financial industry and promote a green economy ""will probably rest on one vote in the United States Senate.""...and how sweet that one vote is!"

Sledgimp and Kimbro Slice.....

I have always felt that if the founding fathers were here today they would either pack up and leave or revolt. This is not the USA that they envisioned.

Hey Kim, I have had a brief email conversation with Sledgimp and I think we could do a really interesting article/pictorial from a Physical Therapists perspective based on Sledgimp and riding in Pow and submit it to journal as well as SW??
Thoughts?

dont you have some tests to go take at school or somethin? DG for SLC mayor 2012!

Our healthcare system sucks yes, but its still better than anything else out there... Im not 100% sure it can be fixed without screwing over one of the three classes(poor, middle, or rich). And no American can see beyond the their own nose for future generations benefits. So which group is gonna take the fall?

yes we need environmental regulations. No it shouldnt be based or funded off political dollars or endorsed by political candidates. Science has become tainted and scarred by political agendas and unfortunately instead of seeking truth and facts it is used to push agendas for $$$. Dont know how to change that or if it can be changed.

There is a lot to be said about laziness and greed. And the ill effects it has had upon our soceity are everywhere. From large governments formed to protect and save us from ourselves, to pyramid schemes and frivilous lawsuits. Americans are always looking for the easy way out.

Cut out lobbyist, welfare, and other "FAT". Get this country into shape, lean and strong again!

Ya, 2 more examples of how great America has become:

1 - Kia is opening a car manufacturig plant in Georgia!!
2 - Americans idea of a diet is to eat correctly!!

americans idea of a diet is to eat taco bell... "drive through" diet... as if sitting in your car and eating taco bell will help you lose pounds... ironic dont you think?

It doesn't matter to me whether you have an R or a D by your name, but this win in liberal MA at least signified that some Americans are waking up and not voting based on party lines or histroy. That, I think is the victory.

Healthcare is a mess, but the current plan won't fix it. Tort reform, competition and placing a little individual responsibility on the "drain" sure could help. I know I wish my company would just give me the cash they pay out to cover me each year, but they can't.

Great points by everyone.
