start with a buffer, then the mothers power ball for what you can't reach, then good ol' elbow grease.

Busch Aluminum super shine
I use busch aluminum super shine. Did it by hand to get in all the smaller spots that a powerball would get torn up in. Like around the cleats on the edge of the running board. Definatly looks a lot better than anything else I have used.
I think the black from the Better Boards reflecting on the side of the tunnel really makes it look impressive.
That tunnel rack took for ever to polish.

is there any sort of coating out there that can protect the shine once you get everything all polished up?

WHen I bought the Busch aluminum super shine polish, I also bought a bottle of Busch aluminum wax and sealant. After I had it polished up to my specs , I followed with a coat of this to help protect it.

Mothers on a microfiber cloth and plenty of elbow grease. Plan on spending 6-8 hours to get the desired results.
There are a quite a few threads here on Snowest about polishing.
A few of the more popular methods include:
1. Mothers polish and elbow grease
2. Busch aluminum polish and wetsanding w/1500+ grit sandpaper
3. jewellers rouge and a high power buffer
I've tried all three of these and the one I've found the best is the wetsanding with aluminum polish as a followup. You can do it all by hand and have a really high lustre shine with less effort than the other methods. Wetsanding with the grain of the aluminum takes a lot of the crap off quicker versus trying to polish it off. Afterwards, a purpose built aluminum polish can bring up a shine in no time by only hand polishing. Finish it all off with a wax coating and you are done.
