Polished rails

I have a set of brand-new oem rails that I want to polish and my question is once you polish them do they need more upkeep because you wore off some kind of clearcoat or will they be better protected because of the product used like blue magic or mothers.

There isn't any form of clear coat on these rails, polishing them will require more up keep though. You could always polish them, then have them bright dip anodized. You will loose a little bit of the shine, but the finish will be fairly maint. free.

they will look so good that you will have to polish them after every ride to keep them that way....lol.. problem is that you cant ever just let them sit in the trailer after a ride dirty as then it will take twice as long to repolish them, I really love the "polished look" but went with powder coat cause it was such a pain to keep perfect looking...can't just hit it with the ol pressure washer after a ride and let it go. and once polished you tend to see every little dirt speck and scratch as well.

^^^ i'll second the anodizing idea !!!

^^^^ I agree. I wont do the polished rails again. There are some "clear" powder-coating products you might check into. Not sure about clear coating after polising, but that would be the way to go

You can polish them and then keep them waxed up or use a good billet sealer like "Zoops seal"

Best to work thru the grits of Wet/Dry paper... from 320 through 1500 and then polish from there.

They look stunning when done, but do require upkeep.

I do not recommend clear coat as they will get scratched and need to be re-polished again as corrosion "creeps" in from the scratches.

Shark hide makes a product that is on my boat and keeps the polished hull good. It would be worth a try after you polish them.
