Police K9 deaths...un-frickin believable!

I was combing through a fallen officer site....as a dog lover and having a wife who is a professional dog handler I took interest in the fallen K9's.
I wish I hadn't looked.
Of the 15 dead in 2012 (so far), 8 died of heat exhaustion being left in a closed car. 7 of those, the car was at the officers house or at the police station. One officer left 2 K9's for a full day!! Another left for vacation for 3 days and found the dog dead, still in the car when he got home!!
Are you kidding me???!!!
I wonder if these idiots were held accountable? They treat these dogs as they would a human when a criminal takes the life of a dog....how about when the handler kills the dog?

wow. Wanna post up the site? That is crazy! Especially because I heard training those dogs is expensive!

In my opinion they should get fired and prosecuted for cruelty against animal, there's laws against it.
Why o why did they choose to be in K9 unit, talk about morons!

The sad part is the officers are not being held accountable in the same way. The double standard is not right.

I have no idea if it's an old wives tale or not, but somebody once told me that killing a police dog is equal to killing a human officer. Like I said no idea if it's true or not, but if so....there is a serious double standard. Nevermind I found it.

Per wikipedia.

"In many jurisdictions the intentional injuring or killing of a police dog is a felony, subjecting the perpetrator to harsher penalties than those in the statutes embodied in local animal cruelty laws, just as an assault on a human police officer is often a more serious offense than the same assault on a non-officer."

Why just animal cruelty? Cause like he said before if a criminal or civilian killed that dog they treat it as if it were a human officer! But yet when the cop does it it's just a slap on the wrist and a "don't do it again" type of thing. It's just sickening the double standard here.

I couldn't agree more.
Just stated what would happen if it been in Sweden.

oops...added the site link, forgot it earlier.

They almost always file animal cruelty charges when this happens around here. I have helped and witnessed several car windows broken to save a dog in parking lots.
"In most states, a police dog is considered a full-fledged police officer, sometimes even given a badge. As such, most laws find assaulting a police dog to be equal or very similar to assaulting a human officer, and as a result some agencies will deem it acceptable for officers to open fire on a person who is intentionally hurting a police dog, with apparent attempt to kill it."

The dog and the training costs more than what the officer makes in a year.

Yes, if a criminal harms or kills a police dog in the act of crime he/she is charged with assault on a police officer or killing an officer.

That comes from the wife regarding her Dept's dog. Also I know several officers whose partners are dogs and I swear they love that dog more than they love their wives. It's crazy the bond between the two, but then again not so crazy. A dog is the most loyal companion and when he will give his life to save yours I imagine that the bond is very special, (without trying to sound like a softy).

I know a few...

I know a few good cops, thats it. Not even a handfull. Most of these *******s are the guys that where teased/bullied in school. Just 'cause I'm a "Kool Kat", doesn't mean I'm above anyone. I treat everyone with kindness. Leave us alone and go catch the guys selling drugs and illegal firearms. Sorry, I love dogs too! Just had to vent. On average I dislike these power-tripping police officers.

Thats ****in ugly man. Treat your pets as family members or don't get them. Our society often disgusts me with the handling of pets. In that roll, who gives a **** how much it costs to train them. They are more valuable than the officers themselves in most cases. One would assume an officer in the K9 unit would give even more attention to the dogs... Odd!
