Polaris sportsman help

I have a '01 sportsman 500 HO. I got it stuck in reverse and it won't shift out, there is no play in the shifter. I haven't had a chance to check it over good, it just happened (it's 1am). I need to get it up and running asap, because it is my only means of moving snow, other than a shovel, and it's been coming down here, supposed to be another storm tomorrow.

You have 2 linkage arm under there. 1 of them has probably poped off its joint. When you shift the lever pulls 1 and pushes the other in opposite directions.. Changing gears will not happen with 1 without the other. Have had this happn before. If its broken you can do it manually under there. Its a bit of a grunt but you can do it. Seen this twice before, the first time I watched my buddy ride 25 miles in reverse back to the trucks. LOL.......................

I couldn't tell much because it is dark, but it looked like they were both hooked up. Thanks though, I'll know more in the morn when I can see it better, hopefully it'll be the easy fix. That'd suck, 25 miles in reverse.....

x2 on the linkages. Happens to our 00 once and a while. they never pop off but they rattle loose and won't make the full shift leaving it in gear...

Your shifter is stuck between gears. Look at the shift shafts coming out of the shifter, one will be farther back than the other.

You will have to either tap the one back in or pry the other one back untill the shifter is not bound up.

I unbolted the linkages from the shift box, and was able to get it out of gear. Once I got it loose it started working again and I was able to get it plowed out. Thanks for the help.
How much snow has everyone gotten lately, we have been getting hammered. There was a storm on the 21st that dumped close to a foot at my house, then another on the 25th that dumped as much, if not more, but came with a lot of wind. So everything was drifted in real bad, there was a 5' drift along the back side of our house.

my 00 does this, learned to not try to shift it if there is pressure on the drive train, i just take my leatherman and pop it out of gear on the arm on top the tranny
