Polaris Dragon 800 fix kit / pistons

Bought a dragon for a backup sled. compression is 115# each side. time for new pistons. the dealer says this sled had an engine update done to it but there is no shim under the cylinders like the fix kit uses. I want to rebuild the top end but would rather just do pistons not the whole fix kit. is it necessary to put the fix kit with shim in or are there good pistons that fix this problem?

The Polaris piston and head update of 2010 (for the 08-09's) did not use a spacer plate ( 0.250" shim) under the monoblock. As it turned out, the 2010 update was actually worse for reliability than was the original single ring pistons and higher compression head that were original for 2008-2009.

MTNTK was the first company to come out with THE FIX KIT in 2010 that does consist of a shim. The company mentioned above has never tested their products on the Dragon and states so on their website.

All of the other kits have now copied what MTNTK was first to come to market with. The shim helps with additional crankcase volume and less side loading of the piston. There is much more going on than just a shim.

At $585 retail, you won't save very much money by installing someone elses 'pistons'.

thx guys, we ordered the MTNTK Kit. many people are telling me to turn up the oiling or add oil to the tank on each fill. is that really necessary? Apparently the oil pump sometimes can be under pumping? seems weird. I really like the dragons and want to make it work reliably..

just put the MTNTK kit in. Polaris is very easy to work on compared to other models. Nice kit. very big ring end gap for this kit.. 19-28thou! guess its better safe than sorry. will fire it up today. very leary about forged pistons but am willing to try it out. Every mechanic I spoke to that I know says it the best kit..

So does anyone actually know about the oiling issue? are you guys actually adding oil to your tanks to bring up the oil ratio??

i usually add a splash of oil to my tank or gas cans when fueling. But when i pull my engine this summer i will be turning up the oil pump

Got it installed, it's smooth... Same power but the motor wasn't in bad shape before. Only pulling 8000 rpm.

Thinking of changing primary spring but it already has the stiffest spring available. 140/330 for primary. The secondary has a 160/240. With a 56/42 helix. What clutching have you guys been running to hit 8250 rpm??? I appreciate the responses. Only want yo set it up for the mountains.. It's a 163 track with 20-41 gearing.
