Polaris-Acquires-Timbersled

This can only mean one thing... future narrow sled/snowbike hybrid is in the making!

Very interesting!!

Polaris sure has been busy growing and buying up companies!!!

The rule was designed to keep tracked atv,s off of the trail system because they were damaging the trail. The way the rule is written snow bikes are also illegal.

I just clarified this over at HCS, but only production motorcycles/ATVs with aftermarket tracks/skis are banned from the trails. If Polaris came out with a complete snowbike, it would be legal to ride on MN trails. Also, a homebuilt snowbike (built from scratch) can be legally licensed and ridden on MN trails.

So, ONLY motorcycles that are converted to snowbikes are illegal.
But anything built from the ground up, or any purpose-built OEM production is legal?

Boy oh boy, someone messed up on the language of that bill.

Pardon my lack of knowledge here, but how rough are ATV tracks on a groomed sled trail? Worse than long track sleds that build wash-board and bomb holes?

A RZR 1000 or Renegade 1000 with tracks can destroy a sled trail pretty fast. But some sled clubs are actually using tracked SxS's for grooming smaller trail sections. IMO it depends on the rider and how much damage they want to do. But a 800cc sled can rip up a trail too if they wanted.

Some people/groups had an issue with the ATV's on the trails (tracked or not) because they were concerned that those same ATVers would come back in the summer and ride the same trails they rode in the winter. Since so much of the snowmobile trail land is across private land that was an issue.

Also was the issue that Snowmobile lic fees help pay for the grooming and ATV lic fees did not. Lots of reasons (both good and bad) for how we got to this point.

Yeah, I figured. There is always more to the story.

/hyjack off

i am more interested and curious about what actual I.P. and patents they are getting.

are they just leapfrogging? i dont get it. any newly minted mech engineer still green behind the ears or some of us could reverse engineer and build the exact same thing. what could possibly be patentable in a suspension set up or conversion?

posturing against AC rumors about boon-docker? just playing the offseason internet hype /us.. kinda like the 3 inch powerclaw in reaction to the T3 late summer 14

Correct. This is taken directly from the MNDNR regulations book:

The definition of a snowmobile has changed and no longer includes ATVs modified with aftermarket ski and track kits.
The legal definition of a snowmobile is a self-propelled vehicle originally manufactured and designed for travel on snow or ice steered by skis or runners.
Snowmobile does not include the following vehicles equipped with aftermarket ski and track configurations:
1. an all-terrain vehicle defined in MN Statute §84.92;
2. an off-highway motorcycle defined in MN Statute §84.787;
3. an off-road vehicle defined in MN Statute §84.797;
4. a mini truck defined in MN Statute §169.011;
5. a utility task vehicle described in MN Statute §169.045;
6. any other vehicle being operated off road.

I think you should try a 2015 or better yet... a 2016 on the trail and see what you think...

I'm not a snowbike owner, yet, but the certainly are no longer a compromise.
