Please Help!

I have a 2002 Polaris 600 VES motor. I just recently took out the Power Valves off the top of the head or the little black diamond looking thinks just in front of the head. When I took these out I forgot to mark what is the correct way to put them back in and also what the spec is on them when you push them in. Is the number on the valve suppose to face the sky? Or the Ground? Also what is the setting if you push the valve in with your hand? Should there be a gap or should it just flush up with the end of the valve if you push it in with your hand. I did not know that rotating these would change the setting of them. Any help would be fantastic. Thanks so much guys

Rotating them doesn't change anything and they should be kind of offset to only go completely in one way.

When I rotate them in a circle the gap when you push the valve all the way in is changing on mine. If I twist it in a circle and push it in, it is now flush with the back of the power valve. If I twist it out now there is about a quarter to half an inch gap when I push it in?
