PLEASE HELP... STEERING COLUMN "GROANS" WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL ON 2006 GMC 2500HD

My steering colum/shaft seems to "groan" when turning the wheel sometimes...

What is the fix for this?

Is it a common problem?

Any help is much appreciated!!

Thanks in advance.

Is it a hydroboost system or are the brakes vacuum operated? Noises are hard to diagnose without being present to hear it. Some 1500s I ran into in 2005-6 had such a noise and I watched guys throw steering gears, hoses, coolers and pumps at the noise with no fix. That's if its non-hydroboost. Does it sound like a hydraulic sounding moan or rub? Or like something laying on the shaft rubbing?

This is the type of noise I was talking about.(see attachment) This tsb is for the 3/4 and 1 ton vans but have watched these type of repairs done with no help. So unless someone can chime in with what fixed their truck, I would not spend the money on any parts that do not show an actual problem.

Gas or Diesel?
Inside or Outside?
Hot or Cold?

Does it affect assist in anyway or is it just noise in column??

Thank for the input so far!!

It's a 2006, 2500HD, Duramax... with Hydroboost..

But... it's not the pump/boost assembly.... It's somewhere in the column... it is more of a rubbing/chaffing noise.

I received an email from a member this morning suggesting it may be the steering shaft and the lower bearing.

Any thoughts on this??

Could be the boot at fire wall, shoot some silicone spray in there and see if it helps. Also you may want to pull the inner shaft apart and pack the tube with grease, then re-assemble.

Bulletin No.: 00-02-35-003N

I-shaft P/N 19153614 has been designed to replace previous designed dampened and non-dampened I-shafts. The physical difference in the yoke size will accommodate all vehicles listed in this bulletin.

Due to the design of the new I-shaft, it is not possible to lubricate/grease the I-shaft.

"sounds like bushing noise (green collar you posted)" Any more diagnosis?

rubbing/chaffing noise type noise is likely not the steering shaft, thats a much different type noise.
Could be the clock spring for the air bag or it could even be the plastic shrouding that covers the steering column. Eric
