Plane down up on Red and White, no good

i saw it on the news yesterday its sad but im glad they found were it went down at. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. from the story it says 3.5 miles north of edwards would have to put it in the area of the lookout which is one of the first fields up on the wolcott side, the one were you can chose to ride the ridge road or the groomed man road. thats my best guess

That's the area our club grooms. I heard of a crash but didn't know it was that area. We have a cat in the area if it would help but I haven't heard from search and rescue or anyone else at this point.

Went up muddy yesterday and thought we would see some S&R guys but no one came up. Except for some hunters that trashed the new grooming up to the saddle. They got high center stuck, spent an hour trying to get them out with no luck.

i do it for a living. small planes and the mountains are a death wish. my prayers go out. :rose:

yep, i live near black hawk and have for almost 9 years. just since we have lived here, 2 have been pile driven into the divide near rollins pass. the downdrafts are so fierce and they have such limited horsepower, the just get driven into the ground.

they already are cutting it close because at 12K feet, pilots have to have oxygen and at 10K its optional. rollins is 11.6 so not alot of room for error.

they pick the low spot and try to thread the needle, some days it works, others not so good.

I used to fly on little planes for a living. Flew all over Colorado. While it was one of the coolest things I did, it was also one of the nerve racking! You get a feel for how little power a plane has at altitude. I'll never forget a pilot telling me to put a hose in my mouth no bigger than a slupie straw to pull in some oxygen.

It's too bad, I lost a friend in a small aircraft accident. Colorado is so tough to fly in. Big elevation and weather that changes on a minutes notice.

Hi gang, been flying the mountains for 45 years in small planes, 3 trips to Alaska included. Flew search and rescue for Civil Air Patrol and Summit County S. O. here in CO. The Duke that went down on Red and White should never have been there, weather was not good. Flying and especially Mountain flying requires a lot of common sense. You are born with it and it's hard to teach, if at all. Mountains and strong winds and bad weather and small planes, including most twins, mix like oil and water. Flying has it's risk as does sledding or driving I-70 with all the dummys on it. Good judgement and common sense will usually get you thru life with out to many pitfalls. I think mountain flying is one of the most enjoyable things in life, at least for me. I love flying the flattopps and watching all the sleds and learning new spots to sled there. Been sledding the same amount of time I've been flying and still going strong at 75.
My 2 cents on mountain flying, Ron
