Pitkin Area Riding

I have been scouting the Pitkin area during the summers on my KTM (HorseShoe trail one of my all time favorites) just wondering how the snow is this year and what the riding is like around there. The terrian looks to be a great area to ride.

I live there and I know the area and the terrain about as well as anyone. The riding is lousy. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone for sledding.............Too much private property....

Interesting... I have heard some pretty amazing reports about how good the riding is in the Pitkin area.

not sure but I think we are supposed to...........

There is a lot of traffic coming over the hill from taylor park/tin cup area

the good riding in either on private property, very difficult to access, or is in wilderness

Owner from sunsports rides there quite a bit but he is a jet fighter pilot when it comes to riding a sled I don't think there is anything he wont go up at least once

I have done Horseshoe a couple times on a dirtbike.
Bill and I have that on our list to try and do on a sled this year.
We go to the top of Horseshoe all the time but usually go up South Quartz or Canyon Creek.
I hope to be out there soon if you want to meet up with us and try it on a sled.

the above pic was taken near the top of South Quartz

Back to Cat- Sounds kinda fun, I thought South Quartz or Canyon Creek looked like the way to get to the top. What is that ridge line like at the top of Horseshoe like. There also has to be some nice bowls to play in near the top. Let me know when your thinking about going up again. Even if your not going to do Horseshoe I would still like to check out the area in the winter. Thanks

Lots of wind at the top, big cornices and areas of bare rock(and great play areas in the bowls) Last winter had so much snow that the rocks never got uncovered, went places that we were never able to before. From the top you have to do a crazy sidehill and then ride across the edge of a huge cornice because the rest of the ridge is always bare rock to get to the Tomichi Pass area. From there you can drop down into Middle Quartz below Hancock Pass or go down to White Pine. It is one of my favorite areas to sled.
