Just heard this morning on Sports Net that Pit Martin, who had played with the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL, passed away at the age of 65, in a tragic snowmobile incident.
He lived on an island on Lake Kanasuta in north west Quebec. Apparently he was crossing the lake on a snowmobile, when the ice cracked and he was sent into the freezing water. There was another person on a separate sled at the time, but was unable to save him.
My thoughts and prayers go out to him, family and friends.
He crossed the lake regularly, by boat in the summer and by snowmobile in the winter. Spring and fall were the most risky times. That being the case, were full precautions (check ice thickness, snowmobile flotation suit, ice picks, etc.) being taken during these risky times of the year? And was his partner fully equipped (life line, etc), should something like this happen? These details of the incident were not given.
For those of you who cross frozen water ways, especially at this time of year, this is an unfortunate reminder to please take the proper precautions.
Pit Martin rest in peace...
