Piston Wash

I was cleaning my sled this past weekend and pulled the plugs and the exaust valve. I was interested, so I lookeed at the piston wash. There was carbon burn on the top, which covered the carburator side 2/3's of the way to the exhaust side in a half moon shap. There was no carbon on the exhaust side and the top of the piston was clean. There were also 2 spots about half the size of a dime on the exhaust side (presumable by the exhaust side ports) that looked copper in color. Is my sled running lean? Am I jetted too close to the edge? Just wanted to get everyones thoughts. I looked it up online and from the images I saw, you are supposed to have a slight carbon burn accross the entire top of the piston... Thoughts?

A lean wash has carbon deposits (is that what you mean by burn?) on the whole piston top, which would be no wash. The air/fuel mix "washes" away the carbon deposits just where the ports are when you have decent fueling. If the whole piston is clean, its too rich. Are you sure you had a clear view of the intake side of the piston?

What fuel do you run, and what sled (and what mods)?

http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/showthread.php?t=247479&highlight=piston+wash These pics show a lean wash. notice how the whole piston is black. There is one pic with a good wash on it (Post #9), though my sled has a little more wash than that and still runs very strong.
