piston wash

It abolutely has to be under a load.

Wash is the cooler air/fuel mix coming through the ports and washing the carbon off of the piston.

The target pattern is a pinky fingernail sized wash area near the ports. I forget how many areas. Maybe 3? Too much cleared off area, too rich. Too little, too lean.

Also, it takes a while for wash to develop. Not even a ride or two is enough.

If I rode the same jets all of last year would it still show the piston wash if I started it up and ran it in the field for a while. Also I heard the way to check piston wash is hold wot and hit the kill switch. Is this the correct way or was I getting the wrong info?

My understanding is that wash is a good way to check overall fueling, throughout the throttle range, and that it takes some time to change. If you checked your wash now, it would still be the same as last season unless you've been riding already (and even if you have, it you didn't change anything and nothing clogged, it would still be the same).

Spark plug reading is what you use to check specific throttle position fueling. Hold throttle at whatever position you want to check the fueling of, hit the kill switch and check the plugs immediately after.

I'm certainly no pro at this, just passing along what I've read.
