Piston Wash readings

I just did my top end on my M8, I was wondering if anyone knows how many rides it takes so you can read the piston wash? I have a couple rides on my sled and checked the piston wash and the top of the piston are still clean. I suspect Im running way to rich yet, any help would be great. Thanks

Sounds rich. The tops should be sooty and 1/2 wash lines at the ports. How did yo see in there, bore-scope?

Piston Wash

Well the top is not sooty at all, how many rides should it take before you start seeing soot?? I took the spark plug out and put a small flashing light down the spark plug hole that's how i checked for wash.

in my experience, wash takes time to develope, plugs are the first place to start. The plugs will let u know whats going on sooner then the wash will. The wash becomes more important when you are advancing timing, ie. getting a better/longer burn

Some people literally get burnt here, if u advance the timing and monitor ur exhaust temps, u will acually get a reading that is cooler, because the heat is being absorbed into the piston, rather then out to exhaust, where u can read it via egt gauge. THIS is where wash becomes really important because your exhaust temps say lean me out more, while ur wash is saying, man im on the edge!!!

Remember, a good tuner does not need a egt gauge. If u take the time to get to know your sled checking ur plugs and wash. You will be fine, an egt gauge will help u in making those minor adjustments once you have your baseline.
