Piston ring direction

Just got my pistons back on. Getting ready to put the cylinders back. Should the openings on the two piston rings line up any special way. I thought I remember that it does not matter as long as the are about 180 degress apart from each other.

Believe they will only go on one way. The Piston has dimples within the ring grooves that the ring openings must be centered on. If you don't do this you won't be able to compress the piston rings enough to put it in the cylinder.

A correct installation of the piston into the cylinder will have the openings on the opposite side of the exhaust (i.e., towards the back).

Make sure to clean the ring grooves, and check the ring end gap, as per Polaris specs . The rings should have a top and bottom side aswell!!

Yeah, like 'sloan188' mentioned.....make sure you put the pistons on the correct way. I believe there is an 'AUX' or 'AUS' and an arrow on one side of the piston top. That should go towards the exhaust side.

I bought the piston and rings complete so I think the rings are on the right way. How do you tell the top from the botton?

The cylinder base gasket has a raised channel on one side and corresponding groove on the other side. Which side is up?

As for piston direction, There is an arrow on the piston that points toward the front/exhaust. The other way I tell front from back on these is there is a oval opening on the pistion. That side goes to the back.

You got it Chief.

If you bought the pistons as a set - then, yes the rings will be installed correctly if that is what you are asking about top vs bottom. Rings will then get compressed to the pins that are in the grooves of the piston (as mentioned before in this thread).

Groove on the base gasket goes up.

Hey - I am back in the New Richmond area again (its a long story). If you need any additional help - let me know. PM me. Good Luck!

Got everything back in today and fired it up. Anything speical I should do when I first run it? Maybe mix some oil with the gas for the first tank?

Can't wait for snow

most of us pre mix every tank, but you definatly want to do it for break in
1oz 2 stroke oil per gallon of gas (high octance, no ethonal)

make sur eyou heat cycle it a few times, then baby it for a few miles before you start romping on it

I heat cycled mine about 15 times in the garage before i ever evn put it back on the snow

Run premix in the fuel tank.

Make sure no air bubles in the bearing lines

Confirm no wires touching anything hot surface.

Make sure it is full of coolant ... if completely drained may empty out when you fill the tunnel .... try wetter wet or equivalent.

I would start it with out clutch installed.

Prime the fuel injection prior to start ... if it was depressurizsed.
