Piston Failure

Anybody seen this happen before? I was running my stock 900 about mid-throttle through an opening when she quite.... rather violently. When I pulled the head and jug off half of the piston was in my pipe in small pieces!!!!! What the FOOK happened?!

Check for rod (up and down) play or tightness... This usually what causes this sort of failure

a dual ring piston i think your lower ring caught a port ..ring locator pin fell out etc...whats the power valve on that side look like

detonation

Detonation is what got this motor be it taking the piston pin out or the ring pin. the bottom line its what got it.

Looks just like mine. I had old gas in the tank. Must have caused detonation.

I can't see the top of the piston but,

If there's no sign of extreme heat, then the skirt broke. My pistons have always rattled a bit. After five seasons they broke. I wasn't in a hard pull and did little damage. Checked the other and sure enough a crack. Look closer at your other piston.
