Piston clips,, HELP

The 06' piston pin/clip opening has a ramp right before the grove where the clip seats... i can get it in there no problem,, but needs to make it over that ramp...

I experimented with my old 05' by putting a socket which has the OD of the opening, and quick rap with hammer and it went in. Marked my old piston while testing.. Is this a way to do it ? Maybe tape it up before rap.. ?

Problem is doing that on the 2nd clip when on rod.

Hey you're in luck I just did this last Sunday. Get clip in place in the bore and up square against the ramp. Find a socket that fits the outer bore snug but not too tight (experiment with different sockets and make sure they sockets are smooth with no burrs to gouge the piston). Put the socket square against the clip and start to push it in at one end of the clip and knida roll the socket around over the clip until all of it snaps in the groove. I know it's hard to picture but it works great and doesn't mark up your piston etc. In fact it takes very little pressure on the socket to start that fisrt clip end moving over the ramp into the clip groove. Hope this helps...I spent a hour on the first clip until I figured it out then just a few minutes on the last 3 with the socket trick.

Also, make sure that the arrow on the piston faces to the exhaust NOT the rear of the motor as the 05 manual shows.

The 900's have the most ignorant circlips I've ever installed and as a mechanic, I've probably rebuilt over 200 2-strokes in my lifetime. There is an installation tool for them that I tried to buy from my dealer but it was B/O'd for 6 weeks when I last did my 9. I can say that a large amount of industrial language does help.

I did the socket thing,, but i was in garage and didn't hear the advise of rolling it in... On the bench o used hammer,, tapped it in..

Then on motor i put wood behind wedged into block, pushed towards me so not to put load on bearings... tapped it in.. I know this is risky,, but there is some slide on top of rod,, about 4mm... And block of wood prevents it from moving, and if slight hit dented wood, it slid on upper rod first 1mm of slop.
Think it's ok..

Thx for advise.

The trick to putting the second clip in on the rod is to not do it on the rod. I install the 2nd clip on the bench and then only need to install 1 clip per piston on the rod. I find it easier to install the inside ring on the bench so on the mag side piston, I install the PTO side clip on the bench and on the PTO piston, I install the MAG side clip on the bench.

Thats what i did. Just gotta get that block of wood supported/wedged in the lower block good.
