Pickup is drivin me nuts!!!!!

Ive got a 01 superduty that has a vibration rolling down the road. Ive changed the u joints and the hanger bearing, balanced the tires, now im leaning towards maybe a pinion bearing in the rearend. Truck has 105000 miles on it, and has seen light use. anybody else have this kind of problem??

I was thinking maybe an auto locking hub shot if it is a 4x4, not disengaging

Driveshaft?

Had a pickup that vibrated from the time it was new, 20 years later when I was restoring it I took the rear driveshaft off and had it straightened and balanced, could not believe the difference. I had jacked up one rear wheel and put it in gear and watched the driveshaft turn, it was oscillating about a 1/4 of an inch, might be worth a try.

Take your drive shaft (front and rear if it's a 4x4) out and have it balanced (as onlyrotax said).
They do a pretty piss poor job at the factory.

Many questions...

Stick or auto?
regular cab or ???
Diesel or gas?
Lift?
Tires...what size?

Explain the vibration... does it come in at a certain speed? Does it go away? does it progressively get worse with speed...etc??

Not sure about the pickup, but...

This guy walks into a bar with a steering wheel coming out of the front of his pants. Bartender says "Whoa, why in the world have you got a steering wheel coming out of your pants?!"

Guy says "I don't know, but it's drivin' me nuts!!"

Sorry, it reminded me of one of my favorites. Can't help you on the pick-up.:face-icon-small-ton

just went through this on my 01 3/4t 4dr dmax, took the tires off on jack stands and still vibrated from 35-50 mph, took the rear driveline off, still did it, come to find out the carrier assembly in the transfer case was comin apart:face-icon-small-con

Belt on the tires starting to come apart (look for bulges or dimples in the sidewall and the traction surface. Front Rack coming apart. Bad Shocks (noticeble shake over bumps). I'd take it to the local Ford Shop.

P.S. At least 3 times a month someone brings a rig into my dealership stating the tires were balanced by some quick lube place down the street it couldn't be that, blah blah etc. We put them on the machine and they are anywhere from .5-1.5oz off. We balance them with a fine art and they are good to go.

If it's lifted (and maybe even if it's stock) might be pinion angle. Also on the two piece driveshafts, sometimes shimming the bearing carrier down so the rear half of the drive shaft isn't at such a steep angle helps too. If I remember correctly, Ford had a service tip involving that back when I used to work for them, but that was many many beers ago. Hope this helps.

Is it a vibration or a shake? Vibration could be a wheel bearing. If its a 4x4 it may not be the wheel bearing that supports the hub-tire, There is a inner needle bearing that holds the axle shaft at the wheel bearing. Have seen these go bad when the hub vaccume seal goes bad and is left alone. If let go to long it will take out the stub shaft and vibrate, growl. Shake could be coming from a bad track bar or steering stabilizer. If one of these goes it will usually shake when going over a bump. Also one time I had a truck come in that the rotors were warped so bad it shook going down the road when not hitting the brakes.

isnt there a updated shim kit for the rear axle pinion angle ? that points the rear axle up more so the driveline angle isnt a steep ?

thats my guess till we get more info ,

2wd / 4wd ?
couple questions .

vibration increase with engine speed or vehicle speed ?

auto or manual ? does it in all gears ?

in reverse?

going straight down the road if you swerve back and forth does the vibration come a go ? or noise or both

does it go away the faster you go or get way worse ?

have you tried rotating the tires ? most of time you wont feel a slightly out of round wheel on the rear of the truck ?

can you feel it in the steering wheel ?

happen all the time or only when braking ?

jump curbs often ?

i worked on a similar truck as yours witht he same concerns and turned out to have a bad double cardon joint in the driveline , (constant velocity joint)

with the limited info you gave ide learn more towards tires then look at drive train

Thanks for all the replies guys. The tires have 5000 miles on them. Pickup is a 4x4 crew cab. Gonna put it on the hoist tomorrow and start pokin around. Talked to a buddy down at the ford dealer and he has seen several 3/4 tons that have had the carrier bearings go out. Guess im gonna pull the cover and take a look.

have you changed the axle u joints yet?? they were bad on my 05 Dodge after 80k KM and caused a vibration

I know exactly what it is. Happened on my 02 and it is not a cheap fix by any means. Jack up the front end and take both front tires off, spin each hub by hand and feel the difference. If one feels like it has a drag on it or a clicking feeling, bingo. Those are your wheel bearing hub assemblies and they are not a cheap part (600-800 bucks up here in Canada at least). I hope it is not that, but it was for me.
Cheers
