PERC Problems on a 01 700 EDGE

Guys, first off, Merry Christmas everyone. I have an 700 none VES XCSP that I put a PERC kit on late last year. I bought the kit off ebay and it was designed for an 03. I bought a reverse pumping oil pump and just put newer carbs on it because my original ones didn't have a TPS sensor. I wasn't able to get the bugs out last year because we ran out of snow so I put it on the backburner until this weekend. It runs great, great low end performance, but I'm having problems above 3/4 throttle or above 7500 rpms. I used my stock mag but installed a 3 degree advance key. Also, I got a newer ignition switch with the premium option to fit the wire harness. Basically it feels like it's misfiring and completely out of power at wide open. If I back off on the throttle a bit it clears out but once I hit about 7500 on the tach it bogs and gurgles. I know I should be running a newer mag (18 degree) but I've heard of people adding PERC to an older sled and just using a advance key. Can anyone think of something I'm missing? Also, it seems to run a bet better when I turn the key to the premium selection.

Sounds like timing to me.

How did it run before you put in the key? Did you check the timing after doing that?

I'm not sure on the 01 but on an 02 an 18 degree flywheel is the only change needed, not the mag. The key should work too.

On my 02 I had the PERC CDI reprogrammed to work with the 14 degree flywheel by Pro5 Racing. That was one of the best mods I've done to my machine. It would be worth talking to them.

Good luck.

Mag

Thanks for the reply, I meant the flywheel and not the mag. I didn't check any of the timing at that time since it was running fine before the PERC upgrade. I'm sure it's a timing issue as well, probably running a bit retarded. Does anyone know of a good reference or tech guide for setting the timing on one of these? Now I would assume my marks on the flywheel will be 3 degrees off because of the key. Maybe the simple answer would be to just purchase the correct flywheel (18 degree).

Did you try it without the key after installng the PERC? My 02 700 ran acceptable without doing any changes at all to flywheel. I know some folks run them without changing the flywheel.

The best book I've found is the Polaris Deep Snow Service Manual. It pretty much covers everything. You will need a dial indicator to check/set the timing.

I have installed perc on several sleds, I have seen it done with the 02 14 degree flywheel and it worked fine, I tried it on a 01 and it did not work, ran like crap. I would probably buy a 02 flywheel since they are easier to come by and use your key. is the jetting correct on the new carbs? if you need a 14 degree flywheel off of an 02 pm me

PERC

Yeah I'm guessing its the flywheel. Can someone tell me what the degree of the 01 is? I guess I was thinking 01s and 02 were the same but I just looked it up and they're different PN. Now the other thing is I'm assuming these kits were designed for VES and I don't have it however I don't see where a VES engine is any different at WOT than a non VES engine.

Just buy a flywheel for and 03 to 05 700 off EBAY. They are cheap and easy to come by. Problem fixed. Also just a comment on the so called "REVERSE OIL PUMP". There is no such thing. The oil pumps used on both Polaris and Arctic Cat motors is a piston type pump. The operation is the same if the pump is turned either direction. I hope you didn't pay much for the special pump. Take the pumps apart and compare them and you will find the only difference is the amount of outlets and the size of the orfice's between the two manufactures. Don't kick yourself too hard, I hate wasting money too. Maybe you can sell the one you took off as a Reverse oil pump and get your money back.
