Paying to retrieve 2 sleds from Taft, MT area

Ok, here's the situation: My father and I were riding from the Taft exit off I-90. We were boondocking through trees when he was thrown into one. We were able to ride down hill only as he couldn't sidehill until we hit an area that he was unable to ride out of. We had to leave the sleds and walk down to the road where we were picked up. The problem then was that I had to leave the following evening for work overseas where I am now. Thinking I would be able to hire a helicopter company to pull the sleds, I didn't think it would be a big deal. BUT... the company that called me back wanted $1,300 per hour (charging from the time they take off until they land...OUCH).

I know that 2 skilled riders could ride them out unless someone here owns a helicopter... lol.. (1 is a 2013 Summit X 163, the other a 2013 PRO RMK 162) but you would have to either have 2 riders ride double to the top of the mountain and 2 walk down to them and ride out (fastest and likely easiest way) or... ride double to where we walked out of and walk in but let me tell you, it's a LONG walk through deep snow. I have GPS location of them and if I find someone that takes the job, I'll pass that info to you. If I don't hear back I will call the VIN's in as stolen. (not that I think any fellow rider would do such a thing, but we are talking about 24K in sleds).

If nothing else, I'll try to do it when I get back home but hope someone would like to help. I'm willing to pay for this of course, just not $1,300 per hour. Please let me know if anyone can do this for me.

Crappy deal! May I suggest that you post up in the Spokane/Coeur d' Alene area thread on the "other" forum. A lot of people riding that area and you might be able to find someone to help.

I would be all in, but I have other time comments over my Christmas Break.

Good luck!

Hope someone steps up to help. Actually, $1300/hr isn't that bad. :face-icon-small-sho You would most likely still need someone to hook the sleds up. Someone gets a free chopper ride! :face-icon-small-hap 2hrs is only 10% of the cost of the sleds. Know that's a lot of $ but just saying. Got to be some sledders that will do this?

what if they get scratched or dented during the rescue?

The sleds aren't show winners, they're sleds... I would accept scratches and a few dings, etc... as long as the engines (with less than 100 miles on 1 & 500 on the other) aren't blown, the tracks, etc are in tact, I would accept it. They're not in the absolute back country where I would need Chris Burant to get them out, but a novice isn't going to be able to. It'll be mainly side hilling. The hardest part is getting to them because you can't ride double down to them, just to the top of the ridge line then walk down. Once there, my dad was riding mine and the mountain bar bolt broke (along with the windshield but that's somewhere else) on the summit, you can fix it with zip ties/small diameter rope, etc. Then, from what I've seen on a topo-map, face them East to and up the mountain, side hill them to the next finger over, then down through trees to the road and to your trailer.

I have 1 person that sent me a msg that they may get it but open to anyone closer to the area because I would need them trailered to Coeur D' Alene and he lives the opposite direction. But still cheaper than a helicopter... :D

I would also recommend posting this in the Spokane/Idaho section on BCR. Lots of good guys that check in daily and ride that area frequently.

If you get in a real big pinch shoot me a PM. I live an two hours north of CDA but could potentially round up the guys and supplies to retrieve the sleds. My bro is home from the army right now so trying to get some quality time with him while he's here.

Best of luck,

JW

Not us, ours was on Thursday but sounds like I should have come back and hired those guys... I have received a few PM's and responded. I'll keep everyone updated if they can do it or not. I really appreciate the help, it really shows what type of community we have as riders willing to help each other. I am currently 12 hours ahead so sorry for not responding sooner.

Did you get some help? I am off this whole week and need something to do anyway but sold my pro a year ago so don't have a sled but would ride along to help ride a sled out or ride someone elses back. Cell is 208-771-2692.

wow,

so 2 different sets of sleds spent the night at taft. sorry to hear. if you don't have any luck, let me know. I know the area pretty good.

I am curious how this plays out, what it took to get to them and how easy it was to get them back.It is great to see all the support here and I feel you could tell 95% of the people here where the sleds are at and nothing wrongful would happen to them.

I'll post the same aerial photos I give to the riders getting the sleds once they have them. I'll even ask them for some pics of the sleds, which by now have some nice fresh snow and maybe even a drift started. I really do like seeing this community. It restores ones faith in a community, especially the riding one! Thank you everyone. I'll ride with anyone here, anytime I'm home. :grouphug:

We got you buddy :face-icon-small-ton! good thing you guys were able to walk out. I have gone on sled rescues where we were actually looking for the two guys and the sleds because they couldn't walk out the day before. They had some STUCK sleds. We should be able to get those out for you no problem!
