Painting my hood

Considering a paint job for my M8.... Anyone have any tips on paint? Should I take it to a body shop, or is there something I can buy off the shelves that will stand up?

DO NOT RATTLE CAN IT. paint work is like a fram filter slogan.... you can pay alittle now or ALOT later.

do not skimp to save a few bux if you plan on painting the hood. take it to a good high quality body shop. you might pay alittle more up front but, the quality and durability are head and shoulders above trial and error methods yourself.

comming from a 25 year auto body industry person. ski

Take it to an autobody place. I did and was VERY happy.

They know what to do with your surface. They can do a good paint that is made to take some branches (ie a $250 job) or a SHOW quality job (ie $1000). And you can stand back 10 feet and not know the difference.

Action Autobody in Missoula is just that kind of place. Dar Riggert is AWESOME.

This is what my carbon fiber hood looked like for $250.

man.. love that color hatch.. looks darn good!!

and I did my own.. did it with a single stage polyurethane, I had it all from doing my truck. the only thing I would do again is prep it a little better.. otherwise, it came out pretty good..

I do quite a bit of custom paint, sleds, bikes, helmets. I would think a fair price for a solid color would maybe be in the $200-$300 range. This will depend on prep, materials used, paint quality, etc. Paint and body work is definitely one of those things you get what you pay for.

Here it is... Thanks for the advice, it turned out awesome!!! I paid $100, which was just the cost of the pant... They wet-sanded, and then added some kind of flex-agent so it won't crack when I roll it. The little spots are rain drops.
